I just installed a RTO-910 and a 8V71T in my MC7 and find I can't put it in first (or any gear) at a stop unless I put it in before I stop. I have no clutch brake and the clutch is adjusted correctly, it's a new style soft pull type. I put heavy gear oil in and want to know it using 40 wt. motor oil would help? I have done a search and think I may have to live with this. Any ideas?

Larry,
Your clutch linkage is not fully disengaging your clutch. The pedal travel before contact with the throwout bearing may seem to be correct, but I would suggest decreasing it some more, as this will move the disc further away from the flywheel. Just don't cause the throwout bearing to run continuously.

This seems to be a very common problem with the standard MCI set up. Plenty of posts that say there is little can be done about it - adjusting clutch correctly, new clutch plates, etc all to little effect.

I don't worry about the "grinding" and ease it into first once the gearbox "grinds" to a halt.

For short stops it can be slipped into first just before you come to a halt without any noise at all but then the purists will complain about wearing out the clutch release bearing and those with ineffective clutch assist cylinders will end up with crook knees.

40W engine oil is standard in the 4 speed.

Thanks for the info. Any thoughts about the RTO and 40 W oil?

The recommended gear lube for a HD manual trans is 50W synthetic motor oil. This oil makes my 910 shift very nice. Frank
