Same topic. But Not the same and totally different auction. - But there is Nationwide. I've never been before - Wonder if anyone else has?? But they send me emails when an auction comes up out here. Usually have a bus or two available every now and then. Might be a place for someone to pick up a deal on a used bus [?] I'm sure some or all need a lot of work but, Wonder what range they run for. Just another auction of note. Nationwide. (Message edited by design dog on November 30, 2007) |

I used to go to the Nationwide auction so often, that I have my own permanent bidder number laminated on a card. When they have buses, they are usually transits, and often are in non-running condition. At one point, Nationwide started assessing a removal deposit on buses -- people were bidding, then deciding to just walk away from their couple hundred dollars when they figured out how much money it would take to get the bus out of the yard. If you go to one of these, make sure you go on the first "preview" day and make a very thorough inspection. Ask if you can start them -- for a bus, they might let you. And don't bid unless you are prepared to tow your prize home -- even if it starts, you might find other problems that will keep it off the road. I bought almost exclusively police motorcycles, for which I brought a trailer. I also bought a couple of cars, and I brought a tow bar with me, just in case. Also, be aware that Nationwide now requires you to be a licensed dealer to walk away with just a title. Otherwise, you will be required to fill out the DMV paperwork and pay the tax and fees on the spot. FWIW. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

O.K. - What he's talking about is L.A. city Metro Transit Authority (city public transit LAMTA,) is auctioning off 57 of their buses on December 5th. I found the actual announcement here. I took the actual copy(not much)from the one page official PDF that is posted on this and copied it in this post. Here's the official notice information. PUBLIC AUCTION The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) announces public auction of fifty seven (57) surplus buses. Auction Date: December 5, 2007 At 10:00 a.m. Inspection: December 4, 2007 From 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. December 5, 2007 From 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Auction Site: 970 West Chester Place Long Beach, CA 90813-2857 BUS TYPE QUANTITY TMC (40 FT) - 49 RTS (35 FT) - 6 VINTAGE BUSES - 2 TOTAL 57 Hope this information helps. Great way for someone to get a good bus at a super price. I'm sure they have many miles on them but were also well maintained. LAMTA doesn't have these kind of auctions too often. Those RTS's are solid (hate to think what it would be like to take the seats out.) If someone makes it then let us know. I would be curious as to how much they go for. What condition they are in. When the next auction might be. Also be nice to see what the 'vintage buses' are. |

Sean - Thanks for the info. Good points, one being, auctions most likely mean tow or money spent on side of the road. Also, gave me a great idea. Be nice to have a bike on the back of the bus maybe. I never thought about looking at an auction for that. Not saying I'd pick one up from there but the possible idea of getting a bike from an auction [?] is an interesting one. Maybe getting it and having it overhauled. [?] [Having a motorcycle on a back bike rack or trailer /vs. towing a car /vs. having none.] Not really looking forward to idea of towing a car yet. Already mind boggling to even drive a bus, let alone towing something. Putting a bike on a tow bar type carrier sounds like it might work and hassle free. Although I admit, once parked, I'd like the idea of being able to drive a car. Alternative is I thought about towing something like a Geo Metro maybe. Also on the auction topic. There is also Public Surplus auction which sometimes sells transits and also school buses. I have looked before and seen some or most a bit pricey for what they are - mostly parts. (mostly wouldn't buy one that I have seen there yet although I have seen a few rare decent school buses.) But they sometimes have some interesting buses to look at and a lot in mid-state or East coast. Got some yr. 2000 Champion[<?] Propane 5.9l Cummins transits right now in Texas. Interesting to look at. It says does not run. [wonder if it's possible to convert a cummins propane back to diesel? or what it takes for LPG?] Public Surplus transit Public Surplus school bus (Message edited by design dog on December 03, 2007) (Message edited by design dog on December 03, 2007) |

From what I understand this is a DEALERS ONLY auction - held at http://www.kenporterauctions.com/ Seeems like The LA Metro Transit MTA - has decided to violate the rules of their FEDERAL BUS PURCHASE GRANT - and deny the public thier right to bid on the equipement - These bus were purchased with the publics money - and should be available to the public when they are put to action Seems like BOTTOM FEEDERS - LIKE TSI - http://www.transitsystems.com/international_shipping.html will get a chance to pick up all these bus real cheap and then sell them to Mexico or oversea - like they have in the past. Pete, I don't see anywhere that it says the auction is restricted to dealers. In California, the term "Dealer Auction" has a specific legal meaning -- if you are not a licensed dealer, then the auction house must collect the tax and process the DMV paperwork before they can release the vehicle to you. This is to cut down on tax evasion and registration fraud. As far as I can tell, the public is welcome to bid on these buses, so long as they have properly pre-registered for a bidder card. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

Have to say... Think Sean is 100% right. I did gov contracting for 3 years. Public Auction means PUBLIC auction. If you go to the website you noted (thanks for that, good to know I guess) it does say also an 'off-site' action. But, yeah, he's right. Don't see why technically anyone couldn't bid on one. By the looks of it too, it looks like a SUPER way to get an maintained RTS. Pretty inexpensive. If you were an RTS fan and were in the market the money you save on the bus you could put back into it and have a super cruiser. Forgot what the deal was again with the trans ratio for these particular yr., model, RTS city buses and how they fair with freeway cruising.[?] If I was in the market for a bus and didn't mind an RTS -- well now would be a great time to pick one up! Plus yes. You can bet probably someone from TSI (and all those other places we know) will be there too. After that they will be slightly higher in price. If anyone tells you that you can't bid they are full of it. Someone get there early and pick one up. Most or all probably run and are in decent shape just major miles on them. If you took out all the seats and had a rebuild done on it. (may not even need it.) You'd probably have a nice bus. I've seen a lot of these buses show up elsewhere and they are great. |
