Folks,
I would like to install a block heater in my 4104-204. Could you please post some info on what I might be wanting to install? I'm sure there are lots of choices out there, and I'd like to have one that works well for us upstate NY'ers. Guess I'd like to know if it's a DIY type installation, or better left to a real Diesel wrench. Maybe a quick (yeah, right) rundown of hassles?? I have no idea if there ever was one on the engine...jeez, I don't even know where they go. I have one in my 7.3 Powerstroke and it works great.

Hi Jamo,

If you could install one on a '62 Chevy you can do the 4104.
I installed a 2000 watt can type unit. That's the type that hooks into the heater hose on a car or light truck. I had to do it twice. The first time, I installed a hose barb into a handy pipe threaded opening in the water pump inlet elbow and the upper one into a tapped opening on the thermostat housing. I chose these because they were handy and I knew the heater had to circulate by taking cold in from the bottom & sending the hot upwards. But when I plugged it in, I found that the hot water opened the thermostat and the radiator got hot but not the engine. So I moved the upper hose barb as far to the rear as I could. I removed the elbow on the "rear" (right hand side from behind the bus) of the block where the air compressor water connection is & installed a tee. When I plugged it in, the block got nicely hot & the tharmostats stayed closed. By the way, I installed 1/4 turn ball valves at the top & bittom so I could isolate the heater incase of hose failure. I mounted the acual heater by fabricating an angle iron bracket which I bolted to the block as low by the oil pan as I could. I used a U type muffler clamp to hold the heater to the bracket.

Jamo, call Kim Hotstart @ 509-536-8660 to see if you can get the one that bolts in your block where the football shaped plate on the side of you block is.Its easy to install if you can find this type it comes in 120v or 240v.I don't think they sell to the public but will tell you a place to buy one,and then you could try the Detroit dealer they may have 1 also

I installed a 1000 watt b/h from the e place at a good price. You can get a 1500 watt one too but I found the 1000w plenty, only takes an hour and it will start like it's august outside. The 671 will have a plate behind the fuel pump where it goes. Unbolt the fuel pump and lift out of the way for easier access. There's very little room for error,maybe 1/4 inch either way before it hits the block which will kill it. I'm sure you could get one from Luke @(u.s. coach)also.

Right part on the way that day.
Luke is a great supporter of our hobby.

The in-block style requires the draining of the coolant below the install point on the block. A leisurely afternoon's job, start to finish, with the wire neatly routed, mess cleaned up and tools put away.

Thanks for the info...

I'm thinking I'll be going with the in block type. Never was a fan of the inline hose heaters. Another reason to call Luke & get on his Christmas card list...or him on mine.
