We now have about 10000 miles on our coach since rebuild (8v71). We are getting ready to winterize our coach this week (won't be using it for a few weeks), and want to know if we should go ahead and change the oil, etc. We have been using Rotella 40. I have read some of your posts that while it is one of the recommended oils for a DD 2 stroker, the ash content is actually on the border line. I think some of you have actually indicated that maybe Delo 100 40w is a preferred over the Rotella. Other than maybe longevity of the engine, will a lower ash content help about consumption? Will it make any difference now to change from Rotella to another brand(s)? If you all have suggestions of brands, what would they be? |

Exxon XD-3 40wt is every bit as good as the Delo 100 and much easier to find. I just picked some up a couple of weeks ago for $8.69 gal. I chuckle at those who think Delo 100 is some sort of magical elixir and they will go to the ends of the earth to get it. Delo 100 has reached some sort of overrated legendary status amongst the bus nut group. But, if it gives them warm fuzzies as they pour it in, and that’s what they like, then that’s OK. |

Buddy, you might look around in this website for some info. http://www.tejascoach.com/ He has some helpful info but remember that under the new 1-1-07 regulations some of the oil classifications have changed, lower ash content is required. Delo 400, in the single weight oil(30,40wt. etc), is CF-2 rated now the same as Delo 100. There was quite a heated discussion, on another board, about this just a couple of weeks ago but I didn't save the link. If you're interested go to Chevron's website, it has all the info there. I use Delo 100 but would not hesitate the change to Rotella if it meant less oil consumption. I think the difference in ash content is negligible. If you change, it would be interesting to know if there is a difference in your oil consumption. Ed |

Ed - Dig a little deeper into Chevron's website from that same page: Over on the LH side, where it says "Product Data Shortcuts", select USA and click Go. That will take to you the Product Data Sheet for Chevron's Lubricants. Once there, click on the Delo 400 link. When the PDS comes up in it's new window, scroll to Page 2. Read what it says in the second paragraph in the LH column. After you read that, scroll down to Page 3 and look at the Data Table for Sulfated Ash content. This PDS is dated 14 September 2007. Who knows when the page you posted a link for was created/modified/edited, but obviously, Chevron's RH doesn't know what the LH is doing. (BTW, I'm sending a note to Chevron about the inconsistency in their Delo 400 info. Perhaps that will help clear this up. . .) On another note, here is a listing of all the CF-2 oils. You'll have to do your own digging thru the various companie's websites to come up with the Product Data Sheets that lists the specifications. http://eolcs.api.org/FindBrandByServiceCategory.asp?ServiceCategory=CF-2 Chevron's Delo 100 isn't the only oil that meets DDA's specs for the two-strokes, it's just the most well-known. FWIW & HTH. . .

Hello. This might be a good time to remind everyone that it is very important that you have the current info on the current oil. Data sheets for the old oil, or old oil laying around with new data sheets... well. you dont get what you need. Reformulations might be a good thing for our heritage motors, or they might not be. Be sure you get apples for apples and oranges for oranges. The clerk at your local supplier might not give a hoot as much as you do. Trust yourself, maybe, no one else. happy coaching! buswarrior |
