I pulled the suspension filter on the mc-8 and it was just a pile of goo. Makes me wonder if it had Ever been checked! Anyone know if NAPA can get this filter and what the part # might be. The housing just says Bendix...Rod

Sounds more like the "air dryer" to me also. If you look on the housing it should give you the dryer model number or the dryer part number. Either way, NAPA, Truckpro, Fleetpride, or any other truck parts dealer can get you a replacement cartridge or a complete replacement model. See if one of these links will help.

Luvrbus, It is up and to the inside of the right front airbeam ( to the right of the brake tank ) My air dryer is mounted center, just back of the spare tire. My brake diagram shows an "E-Suspenion filter", but the air line diagram just calls it an "E-filter". Are these perhaps NOT the same filter? Hope there's not two that look this BAD!.Rod

Hello Rod.

More than likely, it was never serviced.

Clean it out, reassemble, check for air integrity before you contort it back in there, blow/rinse any goop out of the lines/tanks and re-install.

By the time it gets like that again..., well it won't ever be driven that far again, will it?

Don't worry about it. You will more than likely be paying closer attention to the air dryer and draining the air tanks than the previous owners did. Nothing of consequence will get that deep into the system again without a healthy amount of neglect.

happy coaching!

Thanks Buswarrior, When you said "contort it back in" I believe you may know that hard to get at little bugger I'm talking about! Unfortunately this one is beyond hope of a good cleaning, and more closely resembles a ball of rotten string than any form of filter element. Something you definitely don't want to get stuck to the bottom of your shoe and track in the house,if you know what I mean..( might put my Christmas presents in jeopardy )...So if anyone can come up with a replacement part # please let me know..it's time this one had a decent burial...Rod

Type "E" Air Suspension Filter - 12F-7-3
( I did not find a Mohawk listing for the whole thing)

Filter Element 12C-7-3 Mohawk $13.82
Gasket 12C-7-4 Mohawk $2.55

I just replaced the drain valve on mine the other day but planned to look inside on the next air system go-around...now that you've mentioned how bad yours was I think I'll go ahead and do it also.

Thanks for the detective work!

-c

Disclaimer: These numbers are from the MC9 book, so I cannot guarantee they are correct for the 8, but I'll bet they are.

"You ain't lying."
I do have some type of filter in the air dryer compartment. It is a fuel or oil filter turned up side down with a hose running out of it. I don't know where the hose go.

Hi all just to add to Chuck MC9's post I have the same part numbers for the filter element and cover gasket in my MC7 parts book. my service book says to change the filter every 50,000 miles, this filter is mounted on a bracket attached to the side of the dry tank,it is to keep dirt and oil out of the suspension and accesory air system. I would think MCI used the same parts also in the MC8. I hope this helps a bit. Dave

Hello all.

Something to consider:

MCI installed this filter for the suspension, and after whatever duty cycle, it was horribly contaminated....

There is no filter leading to the brake valves....

So, what has been fed to the other air components over the life of the bus?

Perhaps something to consider with a beverage of your choice in hand, a comfortable camp chair and the colours dancing from the "additive" to the campfire ring?

If it restricts air flow to your horns and wipers, the dash gauge pressure ought to be pretty low, too!

For what it's worth.

Tom,I had to take another peek at the air line diagram, and it apears that on the MC8, the guage is fed direct off the dry tank, Iv'e always had solid guage pressure but the horn is an unusual embarrassment.Kinda hard to yell outta that little window too!..Rod

We got a couple pairs of old air horns from my father-in-law. When I tested them, they were pretty sad. I removed the caps on the back end of them, removed the springs & diaphragms and thoroughly cleans all parts and air passages. Put them back together and WOW! what a difference. Might try that with your horns. Jack

Yes, Horns really perk up with some cleaning.

Remember duty cycle, over the life of the bus, not really too much air has gone through them from the inside, the drying out of lube from how many years ago, and that creepy-crawly stuff gets into them from the outside open end...either forcefully in the wind or by way of crawling.

Wiper motors and controls are the same. Take them apart, clean them up and you might be please with the results of an afternoon's tooling around.

happy coaching!

Roddy's right - the dry tank is what's measured by the gauge, and the filter in question is 'after' that in the flow, so its 'cloggdness' condition would not be reflected on the gauge.

Something else that could indicate its cloggdness would be slow suspension inflating!

My MC-5 parts Manual has the same part # so I'd say the 7 must be the same if its the same on the 9 Mine was the same 3 years ago I got the parts for the smallest amount from MCI.
