A friend is stuffing a DD Series 50 into a Sportscar of Coaches (4106).

The donor transit has the pumpkin on the drivers side (looking forward from the engine) the 06 has the pumpkin on the passenger side.

It would take a lot of bulkhead carving to run the driveshaft across and use the transit pumpkin.

So he will be using the 06 pumpkin for now..

Is this the case with ALL transits ?
Or do some have the pumpkin on the drivers side (again ,from aft).

The question is because the use of a transit pumpkin will allow rear axle gear selection , and 40 years newer parts than the 06 unit.

As the HP and torque will be double , parts is always a concern.

A series 50 has twice the HP and torque of an 8V71? It wouldn't be the Sports Car of Coaches, it would the Indy Car of Coaches. :-) I want one!!

Fred -

I don't know if the pumpkin placement is the same for all V-drive transits, but it may be, since the majority use the Rockwell/Meritor unit.

The "tallest" rear axle ratio for the angle drives is the same as the ratio in the 4106 - 4.125:1. There are a bunch of lower gears available, but with the V-730, it drops the top speed even more. 4.56 and 5.38 are very common transit rear axles, with 65 and 60 mph top speeds, respectively.

S-50s run anywhere from 275 - 350hp, with torque readings up to about 1100 ft/lbs or so, not double the 8V71's numbers. As you know, several folk have stuffed a 350 hp 6V92TA in the '06 with good results, the S-50 will be similar, with a lot more shakin' at idle. The V-730 can handle that, and the '06 pumpkin should be OK with it too. Understand the 40-year newer parts thinking, that's for sure.

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

You could put in a 4104 rear with 3:55 gears.

Hi RJ There was also a 4:10 combination.
I got one from Luke and he was surprised and said no wonder that Bus went like a jack rabbit. It came out of a bus he ran.

I also have a spare 4:125 which is the more common "tallist"

SORRY!

The question really should have been better stated.

Does anyone with a factory Series 50 in a V drive transit have the pumpkin located on the passenger side? What model bus?

GMC RTS-II / TMC RTS-II / Flxible New Flyer / - V731 or V730 with 8V71 / 6V92 / 6V71 / L10

all have the Pumpkins in the center - with the angle drive pointed to the rear passenger side

they all use 14 bolt Rockwell 59000 V-Drive rears
available in two widths (96 and 102"

Nova RTS - Series 50 with V731RH (right hand drive) also use the same setup - center pumpkin / angle drive

Hertz and Avis RTS's with retro-fitted series 50 used STEVENSON's Reversers between the engine and the V730/V731 and the same rear end

I understand the original plan was to run the series 50 backward to solve the rotation problem. But it caused problems getting oil to the crankshaft bearings. Allison also provided an "R" option V730/731 that reversed the input rotation.

Thanks guys ,

this will have the reversing 5 speed Z-F , the final gear I believe is an OD.

With Jakes , retarder and those HUGE transit breaks , it should be able to run up or down little speed bumps like the Grapevine at close to 100mph. A real Sportscar !

Many Golden Gate RTS's have right hand 6V92's into an 5 speed ZF (O/D) - same rear - middle pumpkin - angle drive pointing to Pass rear - same 14 bolt 59000 Rockwell rear axle

most have fancy commuter seats and 4.56 or 4.10 rears - with the ZF - O/D they could probably go close to 80MPH
