my 4106 has an 8V71 with a V730 trany. There is a trany fluid cooler in front of the radiator. On a short trip of 1 hour hi-way driving, both would over-heat. Outside air temp was about 60 F. They could both cool-down a bit if I really got on it on a down hill (70 mph).
If I went slow, the temp was OK. The wife drove it home and forgot to turn off the fast-idle and said it seemed to help. I suspect the fan
control (thermostat/valve??). The GMC book describes it but refers you to the engine manual (of which I haven't got). Any help would be

if you have the fluid fan and not the belt driven fan you have a temperature valve that controls the amount of oil that is retained in the fluid fan housing, the more oil retained in the fan housing the faster the fan will turn (not really faster but more in line with the engine rpms), that valve can be adjusted to turn the fan on at different temps. mine comes on at about 170 deg., I installed a ball valve just before the temp. valve on mine for when the outside temp. is like 90 deg. closing the valve helps keep the engine cooler, it keep the fan engauged continually ... the temp. valve can be adjusted by removing it and losening the jamnut and turning the adjusting nut clockwise to decrease the engaging temp, one turn decreases the temp. by about 3 or 4 deg.the info. for the fluid fan should be found in the bus service manual........ now with that said if your trans. oil level is too high you will also get the same semptoms as you described, if you have a trans. temp. gauge installed you will see the trans. temp. increase thus increasing the engine temp.....the trans should run like 170 deg. if it goes up to say 180 or 190 then you will see the engine temp rise with it.....

Dwight, Thanks for the info. I have the fluid fan. I have about 10,000 miles on this bus and it has always run @ 150 tranny & 180 engine. With out side air temp of 95 & hi humid it would run hotter. I think the temperature valve must be stuck open. It runs @ norm temps at lower speeds (40-50 mph). Can you tell me where is the valve located? Also is the valve acuated by water temp or oil temp? the gm manual gives the system a little text and then refers to the engine manual; I need one. joe shelton 4106-2119

While on the subject, where can I find technical info on the fluid fan drive? I have both the 4106 and 8V71 manuals only minimal mention of the fan drive in the 4106 manual. I don't have any problem now, except for some oil leakage, but I hate to be in the dark.

Joe , that valve is located in the easiest place in the world to get to....IF you are a snake!
The valve is between the engine and the forward bulkhead.
It is a job best done fron the bottom of a pit, and it is a brass object about the size of a small fist.
I thought I had a problem with mine, replaced it and then found out it was a plugged radiator, my used one is in perfect condition, let me know and you can HAVE it (now I'll have to find it..!)

BTW my 90lb. wife did the swap, she was the only one able to crawl under while the bus was on ramps, AND I used a big whip.....:)

Thanks, OAE Palmer. I am planning on changing the one I have and will be more than happy to give you the $ u payed + shipping. I assume it is installed in an oil line from the engine to the radiator. I'm not clear on how it is accuated; is it by oil temp or water temp? If by water temp then it must be hooked up some way with both systems (i.e. oil & water). Hi joe, it has an oil line (inlet) comming from the bottom of the fan housing going to it (vera-temp-valve) then from the valve to a place on the engine block to return the oil to the engine, the valve itself is screwed into a water inlet line to the engine, that is where it gets it's temp to know when to open and close, some have a airline attached to the top of them which is then attached to a solenoid valve, this valve was controled by the a/c, it was engauged when the a/c compressor was on.....others had a solenoid valve in the oil inlet line and just closed the oil return to the engine....
Ok now for those needing manual info. I will scan and post somewhere and let ya'll know the address later....
