"Many a tear will be shed over the demise of Netscape, the brand behind the first real browser for the common man. Navigator did more to popularize the Web than Hotmail, Yahoo and Altavista put together. It was helped by the fact that Microsoft was caught cold by the popularization of the web, spending years playing catch-up with Netscape in the browser marketplace. Netscape ultimately went open source and became the direct lineal ancestor of Firefox. So while the name dies, the great platform which Netscape offered lives on". John Conroy, CMS Wire. Guess it's time to take the notice off the homepage after 10 years! *sniff* Ian www.busnut.com |

It'll take you more than ten years to find all the data Netscape has hidden in your computer without you knowing it! |

"Its current caretakers, Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, decided to kill further development and technical support to focus on transforming the company into an advertising business." - here lies the problem I gather, it got taken over by AOL. :-( "People will still be able to download and use the Netscape browser indefinitely, but AOL will stop releasing security and other updates on Feb. 1. Drapeau recommended that the small pool of Netscape users download Firefox instead." - Looks like it will still be available, just not promoted or supported. - For what it's worth. It doesn't get much promotion ... but There is development being done over at Mozilla on a product called [I know it's a crazy name] - SeaMonkey. Aside from the name, It has the Netscape engine. And it is the closest thing to Netscape, (much closer than FireFox) I have ever seen. Best of all it has Netscape HTML editor built into it and email! (I mainly liked the HTML editor in Netscape.) Not for everyone but if your a Netscape fan you might want to take a look. It really is basically Netscape, it's uncanny how close it is. But sadly, yes. The end of an era. But I think the technology of Netscape isn't dead - yet. Myself - << I'm still trying to figure out what happened to all my hours on Compuserve that I paid for. mozilla seamonkey [The SeaMonkey project is a community effort to develop the SeaMonkey all-in-one internet application suite (see below). Such a software suite was previously made popular by Netscape and Mozilla, and the SeaMonkey project continues to develop and deliver high-quality updates to this concept. Containing an Internet browser, email & newsgroup client, HTML editor, IRC chat and web development tools, SeaMonkey is sure to appeal to advanced users, web developers and corporate users.] |

I was a Netscape user for years until AOL came into the picture. I want nothing to do with anything AOL so switched to Mozilla then Firefox. Maybe it is because my changeover was so gradual, but I find Firefox every bit as easy to use and with more useful features than Netscape. |

I am the same as Gus. I was big on Netscape until AoHell took it over. Firefox is much better, smaller and less blingy. I feel that AOL software is written for people who are barely computer literate. Once you bust out of there little guided tour and away from all the cartoonish excess, it is fast simple and effective. I usually have 4-5 tabs going at once. My wife will be sad to hear Netscape is going away. I was on Compuserve way back in the beginning and even used OS2 and Netscape for a few years until support dried up. OS2 was way better then Win 95 early on but got squashed by the MS jaugernaut. |
