Don't forget there is inframe and out-of-frame.

Maybe someone can point out the difference of the two?

- not me.

Also, maybe when each or the other is necessary in whichever case AND what usually is replaced and rebuilt?

[My thinking is, aside from major problems that would force an out-of-frame rebuild, then mostly it's a rotation process.
new
next is 500m inframe
next is 400m outofframe]

Also, aside from the 500m engine rebuild what are the major rebuilds/maintenance that need to be done every 500m to 1million?

what distance is a 740 tranny good for generally?

Hound hoped to get 200,000 miles from an 8V , but not many busses got that far before being rotated thru the annual change out.

The truckers usually screw the gov far beyond the Hounds 1650 and the service life would suffer as a result, if the cruise was over 1950.

1800 rpm is the prefered cruise and 350,000mi is availible from a factory engine , 200,000 to 250,000 after an inframe.

An inframe is an overhaul ,usually with the heads sent out , and a cylinder and bearing kit tossed in.

Take the engine out , bore the crank cam and crank bores ,(after a boilout) , grind the crank and cam , stick it back together with a rebuild kit , and its "REBUILT".

Many more hours than these can be obtained , but usually NOT at 100% reliability.

As for mileage on bus motors...

If you figure that the bus was left running all the time, and buses generally drive fewer miles than a truck in a given day...

the amount of "miles" you get out of an engine will vary wildly, depending on how the engine was operated.

The newer computer engines will let us see hours of engine run, as well as mileage, which is more readily accepted as a fairer measure of engine use.

However, the quality of the re-build and maintenance will continue to haunt us all!

For a busnut, if it doesn't smoke once it is warmed up, and starts to a little below freezing...

Go find something else to worry about?

happy coaching!

Why I"m asking.I bought this bus from a church in del rio, texas, which owned it for couple years, did'nt use it much, they did take kids to san antonio three months ago.(about six hunred miles round trip) Before the church owned this bus, it was own by del rio high school who bought it new in 1979 for sports events.Bus has approx 500,000 miles. I talk to mechcanix at school who also was hired by church to look after bus said he just put new tires, water pump ,injectors, new air bags and batteries before they decided to sell it.He said, bus runs good a little black smoke when first start, but he thought is'nt being run enough, but he sured me no blue smoke, he also didn't think it was over hauled, but they have lot of school buses he might of over looked this.He plans on having all the records for me when I pick it up this weekend. I would have picked it up before this, but one of the new air bags were leaking.I'm hoping for memory lapses, and maybe bus was overhauled.
Flying out friday morning, be in del rio noon time, afternoon back to michigan 1600 miles. Will be reporting all weird noises along way.

Al, I am sure your mileage question was a valid one. I was just commenting on a neat quote from another party. I promise I wasnt downgrading your concerns, In fact I am not very educated on this new bus venture. I am longing for the quiet drives in my landcrusier without the cry of typical lifes troubles. Good travels to you and I hope everything works out with your engine concerns, I would be the first to help if you or anyone else was stranded on the road. Take care Cowboy

Al,

What bus exactly are we talking about here?
Make model year etc?
In the thumbs it looks like a MCI8 or 9 with a detroit green engine.
If you can at all... post another photo just a bit bigger. Like to see it.
Congratulations on your purchase.
Let us know what happens.
- might find a good link here in the archives about basic fluid check and pre-road check that might help out. Find a mechanic to bring it to.

Just want to say thanks for the input from Luvrbus, Buswarrior and FF. For me anyway, it's all this great input that makes it enjoyable reading the board.

Couple minor points to add.
[An inframe is an overhaul, usually with the heads sent out , and a cylinder and bearing kit tossed in.]
Don't forget there are MCI and OEM rebuild parts and the price of the two are NOT the same. So a rebuild OR a inframe could in fact have OEM or MCI parts. Actual MCI parts should give you more miles and more reliability and the price is a jump. Someone who does rebuilds could maybe vouch for either. Just saying there are people and places who do use OEM.

As pointed out many times before by others... a running diesel is a happy diesel. They don't like to sit.
I met a charter owner. He said he had a fleet of MC8s and ran them 6 days a week straight for about 5 years solid going from LA to LV to Laughlin and back. Would put about 500m on them, turn around do the inframe rebuild himself and then do it all over again.
Unfortunately, most conversions don't run 6 days a week. Especially now with the price of diesel.
I don't think most of us will get that many miles who knows. Safe to say at least about 250 if taken care of after a inframe. But I think Buswarrior is right. Mileage can vary wildly. You never know sometimes. Depends on usage, other malfunctions, heat, oil, bad parts. Some drivers don't actually like the newer engines too many bugs.
Luvrbus thanks for the tip on the tranny. Nice to hear when you pull out flooring. I need to keep it serviced and I do need to get a Book.

I saw that bus for sale also, thought it looked like a good deal. As for # of miles on an engine. My first new truck had an 8 V 71 that dropped a valve at 186k and when i tore it down the engine was worn out. One of my freinds had a Mack with the same motor and had over 500K when he rebuilt it, so go figure. Luck of the draw as far as I can see. I was using mine a lot harder than a bus would though, cross country with wide machinery.

Al, if the engine is indeed gray it will be a DD dealer rebuild.another thing I would ask the guy what kind of oil to use if he shows you a 15-40 stop and change it schools and churchs will use what they have. have a safe trip

Unfortunately, most conversions don't run 6 days a week.

Truer words were never spoken!

We attempt to put AT LEAST 100 miles a month (one shot) on the bus EVERY month to preclude the extra maint of a just sitting bus.

Most RV busses are killed , not worn out by not following Da Book in terms of proper storage.
