On a Eagle with a 8v71 how do you add a tach. The original alt is belt driven and not used(bad). It now has a single wire automotive type 100amp to charge crank batteries. My 4106 I used to have had a gear driven alt and I added a tach off of this. I need a tach more than a speedo. Do they make a gear driven unit with a electric sensor that can be added to the engine and use a electronic tach not mechanical.

Ed, The way to do it is with a sensor that screws into the bellhousing and monitors the flywheel teeth. Not a big job-
I have a tach and the sensor that would be less than half retail $$- 14bama@bellsouth.net chuck

"I need a tach more than a speedo."

What on earth for?

The engine is goverened so if you haven't tampered with it , the engine should be unbreakable.

For down shifting in traffic or hills simply mark the speedo with a COUPLE OF PIPS.

Install one at the top speed in each gear , and you will know where to shift after slowing in traffic.

Forgot to mention it is a 5 speed auto trans and I don't know what it is running at against the governor.Tach will be nice so I know when manually downshifting or up.Kinda hard sometimes to hear and feel it shift.

Your automotive alternator should have a output for the tach. Most of the electronic tach can be adjusted for the correct rpm's. Use your multi meter, check the outputs on the alternator for AC output. That is where the tach hooks up.

Ed, on the front of your 8v71 it has a tach drive looks like a speedometer drive where you can install a sensor it may still have the cover cap on it or there could also be one on the rear of the engine fwiw I have the Dixson tach with the electronic drive works great and they have a speedometer that works off the Allison the same way
