Both my engine and V730 trany are over heating @ hi-way speeds. Some one said if the V730 over heats it can cause the engine to over heat too via the trany cooler. I guess that is the unit that looks like a big hydrolic actuator. Is there a way to test it. I'm hoping its the fan control valve instead as it looks alot easer to service than an over heating trany. Get out "da book" on the V730 and do the stall test on the clutches. If one of the clutches is slipping (usually 3rd and easy not to notice), it will transfer its' heat to the engine. Hope that's not your problem since the cure is a tranny rebuild.

Could be other problems, certainly, such as cooling system components failing - radiator, water pump, thermostat(s), hydraulic fan control, etc. Trouble shooting time.

I find one of the under $75 remote temp readers with laser pointer can be invaluable for cooling system checks. See if you can borrow one if you don't have or want to buy one. They're slick.

Thanks Jim. I don't have "da book" for the V730. Can you or some one describe the clutch stall test? I hope it's not my trany!
What is the laser pointer temp reader? I'll go get one if I know what to ask for. Just give me enuf info so the tool shop folks will think I know what I'm talking about.

park brake on, foot on brakes, put tranny in drive, push accelerator to the floor, engine rpm should be like 1250 rpm, if engine runs away the tranny is slipping, mine goes up to 1300 that is ok also, NOTE DO NOT DO THIS FOR MORE THAN 10 OR 15 SECONDS !!! because the tranny will over heat quickly......
did you check the fluid level, if it is too high it will over heat, check when it is hot, run it on the hwy till it gets hot then check it !!!!!!!! re-read the previous note well !!!!
you stated that it only overheated at high speeds, high oil level in the trans will cause that and nothing will cool it other than removing some oil from the trans !!!!!!!!!
you can check the temp. easy, just watch at what engine temp the fan kicks in (about 180 deg), it should really push a lot of air and the fan noise should really in crease with increase in engine speed.....after it cools the water it will slow down and quietten down with increasing the engine speed......

Joe,

The temperature sensor is a little larger than a pack of cigarettes. It has a digital readout that tells the temp of what it is pointed at when you push the button. They will all work from 25 to 30 feet away, the better models much further. The laser pointer doesn't get involved with the function, it just shows you exactly where you are reading. Fancier models have extensive memory and math functions. The cheapest model w/laser will probably do whatever you will need.

I use mine when we stop in a rest area to check tire temp. You can check all tires on coach and toad in a minute or so, to a tenth of a degree without getting your hands or knees dirty. Even the inside dual is easy. Much more accurate than the hand on the tire trick.

Dwight gave you the straight stuff on the stall test. I was told years ago to do it in both first and reverse to check different clutches.
FWIW
