Hi All, There is a 64 4106? on Ebay and the seller claims 10 - 13 MPG with a detroit 8V71 and Allison auto. Is this realistic? What mileage is possible with a light foot in a 4104?

Thanks, Chuck

I have a 4106 and I have had as good as 8.1 and 8.3 with an automatic. That was cruising at 55 on flat ground. I normally get 6.8 to 7.2 mpg.

I havn't figured this current trip yet, Going through the mountans headed to Arizona I figure somewhere closer to 5mpg.

I have heard many times that the manual trans models get 10mpg. I guess 13mpg is possible, (not probable) doing a steady 45mph with a tail wind on the flats MAYBE.

With a manual tranny and good technique, possibly in the ten range. Beyond that, I turn into a non-believer.

My 4106 with an auto (v730 and N70 injectors) gets what Jim's does. I often wonder how people get the inflated numbers that they do.

Wow, could I write a long page on this one subject,Ebay, let me tell you a little story about a volkswagon older one I bought to restore.I found one on ebay after 6 months of looking. The car was in new mexico I lived in calfornia owner bought car supposedly in oregon for his daughter she didn't want it so he decided to sell on ebay.He made it sound good I bid it, got it, twenty three hundred I called him he assured me no rust at all.I'm retiring 6 months I,m going to ship to mi at bother house. Owner said no problem my friend going to chicago he can deliver for five hundred dollars. Hey nice guy, other wise auto transports wants thousand dollars. My brother calls me after week latter cars delivered laughing and he can't talk he laughing so hard.He says you need to get here to look at your car, why I said, he said just get here.Couple days latter I arrived. It was the nightmare from hell.First of all I walk up to it, looked like some body shot at it with rock salt twenty years ago. chrome rims were all rust.Open passenger door dropped six inches. Battery goes in back seat ,box rusted out battery set on opposite floor board, car would't even start.I kept looking for tv cameras cause this had to be a joke. after trying many times to get a hold this guy, I told him door drops down.He never open that side of door,He said, What about battery box? what box I thought that it sits there. What about chrome rims? That was a reflection in picture probably.Ok ,what about engine don't run?Well I drove it on trailer,oh you did something to it so I have to buy it back.Oh, he said, are you hasseling me?
Well after a month I settled for two thousand of my twenty eight hundred and he got volkswagon back.
Ebay Is to sell something they don,t have use for any more, maybe spice it up to make sound better, possible.
As for 13mpg,on a bus maybe adding the numbers they misjudged, so did they lie,no.but the balls in your park, you can say prove it you lie'en bastard.......later

When we had our '06 4 speed manual, we never got less than 9 and we never got 10. Didn't seem to make any difference if we were towing or not, flatland or mountains, always between 9 and 9.9 MPG. We usually ran about 1950 RPM/ 65-66 MPH.
Now our MC-8. about 8,000 pounds heavier with same engine and auto trans gets 6 to 6.7 MPG. Jack

MC8 8V71 at the lower 280 HP setting and Allison HT740, 3.7 rear diff gear.

Run at 70 MPH, 2100 rpm, on the highway to Florida and back, I get 6 MPG US.

Run at 60 mpg, squeeze 7 MPG.

When calculating fuel consumption, many folks aren't consistent in their filling methods, they base it too few fills, their odometer accuracy is suspect, they mix up their conversions if US gallons, litres, imperial gallons, and currency exchange is involved, the gas station printed off some weird numbers to make the bill right, they got "hot fuel", too many variables for those less than interested in meaningful results.

Running a bus may be expensive, but its still cheaper than staying in motels and eating at restaurants...

happy coaching!

I agree with buswarrior, most fuel consumption calculations are suspect because of inconsistant filling. I have a digital fuel guage that has errors under 1% and resolves 1/10 gallons. With this guage I've observed over 5 gallons difference in tank contents after carefully filling in the same way. Using my guage to correct the fill points has made my fuel consumption calculations quite consistant at 8.5 MPG. I typically drive at 65 (1775RPM) and have a manual transmission. Most of my recent trips have been in the hills of the eastern US.

I just met and talked with Little Roy Lewis of the Lewis family bluegrass band while attending a festival with our coach and our conversation was about this same point. He was telling me he averaged about 6 mpg. He has a 45' MCI Renaissance automatic with a series 60. The last time I checked I thought I was getting around 8 but my bus was half done at that time! Haven't been able to afford a fill up since then. My coach holds 240 gallons and at 3.30 per, it adds up. right now I'm just above half full!
By the way, our bus was used to transport "The Bit's of Grass" bluegrass band to this festival. Nothing like being treated like royalty when you arrive in style! They closed the streets for us and after we got parked, they put cones all around the bus! People were milling around outside looking thru the chain link fence and also in the windows. We could see them but they couldn't see us! Cool feeling to say the least! I guess they really thought there was someone famous inside! LOL Oh yea, there was...

IF he has the Allison VS2-8 stock injectors 55 mph cruise on level ground, he may get that mileage, but I doubt his numbers. Could get that with a 4104 with 3:55 gears on level ground without much trouble. Someone on here claims he gets pretty close to that with his VS-2.Figure low of 6 and high of 9 would keep your hoped for mileage realistic.Sounds poor, but many four wheel drive pickups around here are happy with any thing of 13 or higher.

1988 Neoplan AN 340 (think 102-A3) 6V-92 TA, HT 748, 3:73 rear. In the hills here in S. Ohio I get an honest 12 MPG. Thats 8MPG down-hill and 4 MPG up-hill. 8 plus 4 is 12 isn't it.

ha ha I got ALL of you beat. Mine uses absolutly no fuel as is it Parked in the yard LOL. However the 4104 runing at 70-75 on the big road will get 12-15. It has a new 6-71 and 4-speed.{FOR SALE}.Don't let Ian see this tho]. The 4905 8V-71 w/auto vs2-8 gets about 7-8 mpg. the mci-8 I anticapate around 6. But think of all the fun ya have when you are having watching all the folks driving them 4-wheelers wishing they could have a big ride like ours and not pull their house from town to town. LOL

Man, there must be something wrong with my 4104. It has a good 6-71, not worn out, the 4 speed stick & the 3.55 rear end, 12 x 22.5 radials & I have NEVER gotten 10mpg in 40,000 miles. High 9s is as good as I got driving 65-67 mph. I do believe if I could put a 4 stroke of comperable size in her, I could get 13 but how much fuel could I buy for the cost?

Marvin, is your 6-71 an original type or a more modern 4 valve engine?

Jim it is a 4-valve head and other than that it all the rest is the same. Their is a LOT of difference in performance and power between the 2 and 4 valve heads. This 04 will run around 85 if you dare!! I drave it from Folly Beach SC to Ocala and driving time with the better half leading the way I still drove it in 6 hrs. used about 1/2 gallon of oil. The engine has only 12-15,000 on it and it will FLY.

Marvin, I love my '04 but I have had it on a downhill, tailwind run at 80 & it's too spooky. Yours must be governed higher as it should do about 75 at 2100 with the 3.55 rear.

I have a new 4 valve head in the baggage bay but haven't had time to put it on. It should make a big difference as the original 2 valve engine is rated at 170 hp & the 4 valve at 239!

Hi Guys
I had a very good friend who said all men lie about their sex life and their gas milage.Well when John Holms (the porn star)died, they reported he had said he had sex with 1500 women. My wife said he probably got a 100 miles to the gallon too.

Good Luck

Either one will eat a gallon an hour for every 16 hp used.

How many HP per hour you USE will determine fuel use.

Jim-Bob: "I have a new 4 valve head in the baggage bay but haven't had time to put it on. It should make a big difference as the original 2 valve engine is rated at 170 hp & the 4 valve at 239!"

Fred, I was responding to Marvin's remark about power. We definitely strayed off topic from the original thread.

However, I agree with you completely about the fuel/horsepower issue. To move my 4104 down the same highway with all the same weather conditions will require the same amount of fuel whether I have a N55 injectors or N70s IF I drive the same speed! If I use those big "defuelers" to accelerate faster or drive or climb hills faster, THEN I will use more fuel.

And you are spoiled with the higher (probably more than adequate) horsepower of your 8-71/4106 Sportsbuscar but the biggest drawback of a 4104 is that measly 170HP. It's kind of like driving an iceberg.

Great point in here:

If all of us only used 170 HP worth of our motors, we'd see similar fuel use to the 4104.

How many of us could let the speed decline on a climb, when there is power left over in the pedal?

Slowing down your highway cruise, uses less power to get down the road, using less fuel.

The good thing about the 4104, the coach doesn't give you that expensive choice!

happy coaching!
