Jeepers! I'm like a kid with a new toy! With many thanks to Ace and Bill from RV Covers for their advice on the Garmin 340C I'm now a happy traveler.

No more do I have to worry about what answers are forthcoming from SWWNBD (she who will not be disobeyed) when I ask her for the next exit we need to make a road change. Not HER fault, poor thing, that she's directionally challenged and that I'm hard of hearing.

For the record, I'm not endorsing any Garmin products over any other manufacturer..they probably all come out the same in the end..it's just that I had the word of mouth recommendation of two friends and satisfied users for a reference.

Hey Bob,

We have that same model too. I really like it, 'cept when it shows us driving though a field instead of the interstate! All in all, it seems to be a nice unit. I only wish there was a way to create trips and routes on a PC and upload them to the GPS. I'll be interested in hearing others' experiences with it.

There are several good GPS programs for that purpose. Mine is installed on a lap top. It'll talk to you also. Big screen (don't need glasses).

My only problem is my Grandaughter keeps trying to steal my laptop.

My program is a DeLorme and was $90 when I bought it. All the PC programs are about the same price and functions.

Microsoft Streets and Trips is one, Street Atlas is another, there may be more.

Everyone will tell you theirs is the best, if you are serious, you read and you decide.

I opted for the one with the largest print on the screen for visual reasons only, the rest is about the same on all of them and a lot more than I wanted and more than I'll ever use.

Go to a GPS forum for valuable tips of using the unit. We love ours. Pretty neat that you can change the voices into several dialects. Try the Austrailian or the Irish one.

I drive a tour bus out of tampabay area with a 340c. I have used it all over the country and I fin it great. I have been on dirt roads in texas and it knew were i was. I have had three ifferent garmins and found them to be the easiest for me to learn and use. I would not trade my maritime one for anything.

Is there any small setup that has BOTH roads and marine charts?

We use the boat a few months at a time , ditto with the bus camper, would like to avoid 2 units.

Nope not the Garmin 340. It DOES have a tool that allows you to program for using a bus at a touch of a button, but not boats.

Better call ~"sea tow"~! :-)

I found a Garmin c330 at WalMart for less than $200 right before Xmas and am really happy with. I use the speed feature a lot because my speedo needle jumps all over the place.

The trip odometer feature is very useful also, saves from overtaxing my brain to figure out the mileage.

This model tells you when to turn but doesn't say the name of the street you're turning onto - no big deal with me.

I usually turn off the voice, it can drive you nuts after a while.

It is not up to date on some highways but, much to my amazement, it shows the little country lane we live on. It also sometimes shows us four-wheeling like David's.

You guys be careful where the GPS leads you. Around here, Cumberland Plateau, Middle Tennessee, mine likes to take unpaved roads and ford creeks. The latest databases are not really up to date for the area even for changes completed 5 years ago. I will be really careful about asking it for the shortest route when I am in the bus. It is great in bigger cities and on the highway.

Stephen,

I have the same thing here, some state highways that were changed five or six years ago are still not on the database.

These things are just nav aids, they are not the final answe. But they are fun at the low price I paid. $400-800, no!

Fred, Delorme has a hand held model that has three types of mapes in the same unit. one for the road, one for the boat and one for the trails.
I just got a flyer on it last week. About $400. I think.
Jack
