I just picked up a newer/used Shepard steering box, Vickers pump, and reservoir for my 4104. Any one done this install? I could use some pic's and advice on running the hydraulic lines.

You can save a lot of money by running black pipe in the grooves on bottom side of body with proper clamping, then use flexible hose at each end. Mine is set up that way and has never been a problem. You're going to love the steering after you are done. Just make sure that you put in some positive caster on the front axle to prevent wander. Normally adding pos. caster will make the steering stiffer, but with power, it won't be a problem.

John,

What size pipe and what type of fittings? Also, what did you run to get by the rear axle and into the engine compartment?

My very early (4104-076) had metal lines run from firewall to front axle. Not certain, but I'd always assumed they were OEM. Integral box requires more output than the hydraulic assist. The pump with integral reservoir won't keep up. The larger pump with seperate reservoir is needed. I can get the model number if necessary.

Also be aware the '04 steering is backwards from the '06 and newer. They each require a different box. We tried manual steering, hydraulic assist, and integral box. Integral box definately the best setup. No slop, no wander.

Bob, if your Shepard box is not the exact one specified for a 4104,(like it is from a 4905, 4107, etc) you will need to replace the right angle box below the steering wheel as it turns opposite to a 4104. You don't want to steer right but go left!

The pipe goes to the end of the bulkhead where the rear axle is. it Then changes to Braided high pressure hose to the pump. Ends at bulkhead at the front axle and then changes to the same type of hose. There is a 90 degree elbow at each end of each pipe pointing straight up. The pressure hose and return hose have pipe thread ends where they connect to elbows. The hose is #10 at both pipes to box. resevoir to pump is #12. Return line to resevoir is#12. ( I don't know if # 12 is necessary from return pipe to resevoir; might have been used so as not mix up lines to pump. The pipe couplers should be the better type- I thing they are malleable instead of cast. The resevoir is mounted to one of the rear engine support vertical pipes. Appears to have about 3 quart capacity. If you can still find the gears, you will want to change the ratio in the right angle box to one to one from 1.5 to one?
