I have gotten hold of a spair 6-71 for my boat , and it has an interesting device.

There is a steel heating unit set into one of the air boxes.

I'm told it aids the heat output to the coach heater.

True? What is the water path , what happens in summer?

Also I'm looking for a WWII cold starting device .
These are also inserted in an air box and are a spray and ignition source. A simple oil burner with a finger pump to pressurize some diesel, and a button to light the sparks.

Anyone ever see one for sale?

Fred, if you need either of these items, you need a calendar & a compass more desperately!
Look at the calendar, get in the sports car BEFORE a cold start device is needed and use the compass to drive to someplace where cold starts are not an issue.

Fred,
I have an Allis Chalmers manual that lists that engine pre-heater but my dozer doesn't have one. You might check at some of the antique tractor shows. When I was in the Army the Detroits used a small diesel injector and an ignitor in the air intake as a cold weather starting aid.

This week I pickled both the boat and spare 6-71, and got a look behind the air box cover.

All the blocks (1944 and guess 1985)behind the air box cover seem to have 1 in or 1 1/4 inch plugs in the block .

Seems on the transit block the plug was replaced with a short piece of pipe , with machined grove for an O ring , and a cast 2 piece cover instead of the stamped steel.

The transit has two of these setups , so I guess loads of hot water was avilable to help heat a northern coach.

Might be of use for other folks , looking to get more heat from the engine.

Certainly looks as if they would work on the 8V , if the plugs are in that block as std.
