I am mounting 8 4D AGMs in the back bay of an Eagle this weekend. Have people found that putting them right next to each other is fine, or is it best to provide some separation for extra airflow and heat disappation? Is some weight of one sitting on another ok, or should the structure fully support the weight of any upper batteries? Coach is unlikely to be used in very cold areas.

I didn't know either, so I mounted them in a conservative manner that has worked well so far.

Here's a pic... http://www.zoto.com/site/#USR.jsbird69::PAG.detail::9c5b701b32ccc778d4af86967c8e43e8

Nice job of mounting James. I may steal some of your ideas as I build mine. Thanks for the pic!

mine are not in a box but they are tied doen good.

also I have 5 batteried group tewnty somthing wet cell 12. on two shevels in the same bay with an inter link to the main alternator..

Basil,

Every battery is different -- consult your manufacturer's specs.

That being said, (1) yes, you should leave as much space around the batteries for air flow as you can afford. They will heat up under charge, and you need a place for that heat to go. If the batteries are crammed together, the one(s) on the "inside" of the group will tend to overheat.

This post has a photo of one of my AGM take-outs last year -- note the bulging case from overheating:
http://ourodyssey.blogspot.com/2007/06/shame-on-me-for-not-posting-any-photos.html
(A more detailed discussion of the battery replacement is here:
http://ourodyssey.blogspot.com/2007/05/odyssey-homecoming.html)

And (2) for the same reason, I would not stack one AGM on top of another without some racking to provide separation. Remember, heat rises, and so the heat from the lower battery will rise into the upper. A gap will allow some cool air in there which will then convect around the upper battery.

Jack -- AGM's are DOT-approved to travel in any orientation. They do not need spill boxes nor do they need to be installed upright. They can also be installed inside the living area (ours are in the tunnel right behind the cockpit).

That being said, batteries are heavy, and can be deadly in a collision. They should be secured in place so they can't come loose. Since our batteries are right behind my head, we had a massive "headache rack" fabricated to keep them from killing me, even if one or more should come out of its bracket. FWIW.

Wow Jay, nice Bluebird. Great work.

And again, thanks for the advice Sean. I will throw a few more inches at them to get some better airflow going.

I see you came out of San Jose. If you are ever back in Silicon Valley, I'd love to show you my Eagle project.

Basil,

We'll be in the San Jose area in about a week, staying for around ten days. Maybe we'll get a chance to say hello.
