Guys: There has been countless discussion about the amount of oil it takes to fill an 8V71. Some have told me that a small oil pan takes 5 gal plus the filter full. Another thread I read says 8 gal total. Now, I know before you say it that DD recommends oil level at 1" below the junction between pan and block, but I haven't found a good accurate way to measure that. The reason I am asking this is that we are using a bit too much oil. I am not smoking, no blow by on the back of the bus, no leaks to speak of, and oil pressure maintains good (45-52 psi). The only thing I can figure is that my dipstick (I mean the one in the engine, and not me) is marked incorrectly, and I am trying to maintain too much oil, and it is simply blowing it out. I still have a few miles before an oil change is due, but if I could get an accurate suggestion on how much oil is required, then I would go ahead and change, then run it with that amount maintained and see how it does. Any suggestions?? I have '80 Eagle, and I do believe it is the small pan. |

Buddy, the 1 inch can be measured on the outside of the engine. Measure from the top of the dipstick hole to 1 in below the junction of the block and pan. Measure from the top of the dipstick down the dipstick the required distance and mark the high mark with a file. Go 3/4 inch farther and mark one gallon low. |
