Early yesterday a Golden Arrow charter bus crashed into the back of a transport hauling oilfield pipe.The busdriver was killed, along with 13 passengers injured, some very serious. This happened on a divided hiway #16 near Edson. Road conditions and visibility (blowing snow) are likely factors in this tragedy.
This is the third buscrash in the province in the last 3 months involving fatalities. |

Latest news shows one of the passengers has passed away also. Sure hate to see this. |

Other factors as cause of rear ending is excessive speed and/or inattention. You don't rear-end another vehicle if you go slow enough! |

To be fair, in blowing snow, driving can be very tricky.
Earlier in the month I was traveling from MI to WA state. As I was going over the grade between Cheyenne and Laramie visibility went down to just about zero. At times I couldn't see the end of the hood.
At that point, even going 25 MPH can be judged to be going to fast for road conditions.
Imagine what fun it was to have the wind abate momentarily to see a car stopped not a bus length in front of me!!
At that point I tucked in behind a semi- and let him break trail for me. At least I could see him through the blowing snow. At that point I also turned on my 4-way flashers and hoped for the best.
I suppose what I am saying many rear end collisions occur because someone decides to stop in the traveled portion of the road while others try to continue on.
It is a tragedy for those who have lost loved ones but one does have to ask why was the truck stopped and why was the bus continuing to proceed on? |

The news report I read said the truck had slowed or stopped to make a left turn and the bus rear ended him. Having spent my whole life driving commercial vehicles and teaching defensive driving courses, I can tell you there really is not a good excuse for "rear ending" someone. If visibility is the problem then you need to slow to a speed which allows you to safely stop within the sight distance you have available. |

Just a thought, If the pipe overhung the trailer it may have shielded the tail lites and buy the time you see a foot sguare red flag, its in your face. especially in a storm. Many states do not allow these loads to roll in bad weather for obvious reasons. |

Another consideration on hiway trucks, most are now using LED rear lights. Those are great,but in cold weather where snow is churning up behind the trailer, LED's don't create any heat and the tail lights or brake lights cover up with snow and become invisible.Just a thought.

I was moving a new Dodge Sprinter van, for my company, from Phoenix to Anchorage during this same time and traffic was moving way to fast for the conditions. I'm sorry to hear about this kind of crash and there's no excuse for driving that fast in this kind of weather....Bill |

A couple of days ago, a couple of moose (meese? mooses? got into an altercation with a bus ferrying coalminers to a mine south of Hinton. Nice Prevost on its side and 32 injured. |
