My 8v71 is getting tired and leaky. I found a rebuilt 8v71 and Allison 740 ......Any problems I might encounter with the exchange of the manual to Allison.....

Any and all advice is greatfully appreciated

Hello Gary I've been told that the 740 is to long to fit an 05 . I got a 654 that everyone said would fit ,but In still had to make some frame mods on thr driver side.

Gary, the drive shaft is different the Allison uses a yoke type instead of the flange type you have on your manual transmission so you will need a yoke for the drop box and I don't know the reason.Does your replacement engine have the double cooler for the Allison if not you will need a cooler and I would try and find a Stone Bennett shifter makes life easier for you no cables no shifter in your way just a switch on the dash. I forgot to mention check the bellhousing on your engine if it's made of cast iron you will not need any support on the rear of the the transmission Good luck its not a tough swap

Ken, I don't know why someone would tell you the 740 is to long for the 05 that was the auto Eagle installed as a option. My 8v92 is 2" longer than a 8v71 and its no problem

Where might one find the Stone Bennett shifter you are talking about. My Eagle I believe has a 654 trans and I know my dad had trouble keeping or adjusting the shifter.Sometimes you had to nudge it slightly to get it to go in 5th.When I get it back from the paint shop I am going to add a tach and the shifter sounds like a great idea. Thanks for any info a good used shifter would be great but new if necessary any idea on prices

I have a 05/1972 Eagle. In it is a 8V/71 W/740 tran. I did not install. It was installed before my time.
I hope this answers your question.

Gary
I have a 69 eagle model 5 and I have changed the tranny and done all that. Its not cheap, but those old spicers are not worth it.When you go the 740 you get rid of all that old linkage etc.I put an air throttle and got rid of some more. There is an extra hole that they had to drill in my block.Sounds like your tranny is already to your engine,so you don't have to worry about that.Your frame has to be modified on the drivers side. All my shifter and stuff came off of a mci.I have had a lot of stuff done to her automatic, power steering, air dryer etc.I have been ripped off a lot also.Contact me if you want I'll tell ya all I can.
