What a Job! Spent most of yesterday running around Junkyards looking for 4 old style bumper-jacks...It's totally amazing how hard they are to find these days!! I only found two out of 4 wrecking yards, so I decided to do the job with just one and move it around as I went.
Spent most of the AM cutting things with my Sawzall to get the roof separated, thinking about cut lines, etc.
Decided to take whole roof up, this makes the caps a non-issue and makes it look good in the end. Origionally I was thinking 14 inches but 12 turned out to be perfect so I stopped there. The Crown is fairly easy to raise using four struts as sliders for 1" heavy wall square-steel tubing and 4 C clamps to keep everything stable while raising.
I welded the tubing to the bottom of the cut and used clamps on the tops to keep it in place as I walked the jack around and around, taking it up about 2" at a time per position. Contrary to what I've read, it took only one jack, 4 C clamps, and about an hour once I got it going. I did have a helper which made things MUCH easier. I did use 4 additional clamps eventually for "paranoia" factor, but I don't think it was really necessary. Just unclamp a corner, jack it up, clamp it back, move to another corner, around and around, etc.
Here's a webpage with all the photos...

We finished just as dark came around, so I'll weld all the remaining struts tomorrow. For tonight it's just sitting on the four posts I used to raise it with....
I'll now shear down the sheets that used to be the interior roof and use them to fill in the sides..recycling at it's best and it's already painted!!!
FUN!!!
Now on to the real stuff!!!!

Gary,
Looks awesome dude. The best part about it is that raising the roof is a milestone for the end of demo work and from here forward begins the construction. Good luck!

Hello Fellow Crown Owner;

Wow!! Awlsome!! Wish I had your energy level to raise my roof like you did yours. Are you going to insulate between the inner and outer roofs?

My '74 10-wheeler, like all Crowns, only has 75" of headroom. Barely enough, especially if I put three layers of quarter inch thick Reflextic stuff underneath.

Expecially enjoyed your pics. Thanks. CROWNS FOREVER!!! henryofcj@hotmail.com
