I am considering a 1990 vintage Prevost Le Mirage with the 8V92 475hp. Want to pull an 8000 pound boat behind it, and hammer up the hills. Local Prevost service guy tells me that 450/475/500 hp 8V92 Prevosts are marginal overheaters without towing anything, let alone a heavy trailer. Says there isn't room for a big enough radiator. Are the cooling systems in fact that feeble? I'm a fearless mechanic, but if the factory couldn't stuff enough cooling system in, I don't know that I could perform miracles. Any fixes? If not, would a big horsepower MCI-9 or Eagle perform better?

Prevosts do not have an overheating problem. The radiator is huge compared to MCI's and the air going through it is incredible. I have driven mine (1989) across country and never has the temp gone over 185. The only time I back off is at high altitude (6000'+) when the pyrometers are coming close to 1000 degrees. If you do experience overheating, there is something wrong besides the design. MCI 8's & 9's do have a problem that requires reengineering blower speeds and radiator sizes so that should not be an option for you. I don't know about Eagles.

Check with the factory, there were cooling upgrades to the H3 Prevost in that era.

Talked to the Prevost factory, they feel there is no fundamental cooling problem as long as the system is still in good shape. Encouraged keeping the engine speed up to keep the cooling fan speed up. Also said that Le Mirage is not acutally rated for towing, so if the combined weight exceeds GVW you are on your own, as they have never tested the systems for use beyond GVW. Very interesting.

I came back home yesterday in my Prevost. Florida to Nova Scotia Canada. Temp outside was high 90's when we left Tampa. Ran 70 to 75MPH pulling a Saturn LS1. The 8v92TA ran 170 degrees all the way. Went up to 190 on some long Virgina hills. We travel 800 miles per day with few stops.I have a huge rad and 33"fan.
From Mass home I blocked off half the rad to keep temp at 170 degrees,(removed shutters when I put in new rad). This engine never runs hot.

Gee Scott-- Prevost installs a 10,000 lb. rated trailer hitch on the conversions shells and describes it's use in the owner manual. I wonder who has liability here if they never tested the hitch?

Hey Gary, your huge radiator and 33" fan, sounds like these are upgrades you made to your Prevost. Was there a problem before or did the radiator just need replacing? How 'bout the fan?

I took out a 8v71 and installed the 8v92TA. I bought the rad ,Fan and new Shroud from Prevost. They advised me of the correct size to cool the 92. Prevost Canada people were very helpful. They cannot do enough to satisify Prevost customers.Prevost is a great bus. We love ours.Drove 10,000 miles this winter carefree. Great ride and handling.

Also if you do experience occasional high heat in the hight western hills, you can install a desert cooler. Once turned on you will be surprised how fast the temp drops.
