i hava a 4104 that i am proud of but recently purchased a 1980 crown with 8v71 and allison auto. i finally got it running and when i first depressed the throtle i thought i was going to spin the tires. its like a rocket compared to the 4104. i have got to swap out the 671 in my 4104 any suggestions?

Bob -

As you well know, there are limited choices for the 4104.

Best swap is a 6V92TA / V-730 Allison out of a transit, tweaking the 92 to 350 hp.

But you've also got to swap the rear axle too, as the pumpkin is off-set differently on the '04 compared to the '06 and later coaches. Not swapping creates drivelines prone to early failure, as the angles do not line up correctly.

Not cost effective, resale-wise, but does make a difference - it's only a 115 hp increase.

Your fuel mileage will suffer, tho. . .

A VS2-8 can be substituted for the V-730, but one less gear to mountain climb with. . .

OTOH, there is a certain amount of charm to the OEM powertrain in the 4104 - for one, it's virtually unbreakable!!

They may be turtles, but they'll get you there, safely, dependably and economically

If your Crown's got an 8V71, it must be a pusher, eh? Two or three axle??
