Geoff,

I have the same rig as you but have never had this problem.

Based on other engines I've had this problem with my guess is that it is the pump shaft seal and I also guess the pump has to be removed to change the seal.

Seems as if I remember reading on one of the bus forums that there is one bolt on the pump that requires a special wrench to remove but I may be thinking of another component.

In any case I hope to follow this thread to learn something.

Do you have the Maint Manual? If not I can email you the appropriate pages.

Pump seal is bad. Pump needs to be removed and rebuilt. Hope this may help.

Geoff,

I'll mail them tomorrow. We're having sleet
& rain right now and it is too cozy here by the fire to go out to the bus.

I found my DD manuals under thatbay parts & accessories. If you find one make sure it says for highway vehicle engines as most of the manuals are for trucks, generators, huge pumps and marine applications.

Thanks again Gus I managed to download all the manual from PD4104.com . so know I have them all on file. Now I guess I have to take the water pump apart? Anyone know if I can get a rebuil kit for it and where?
I'm in Florida at the moment.

Geoff,

Do you have the DD manual, I'm not sure if you're talking about the DD or bus manual now?

Do you still need my copies?

Geoff,

I can’t imagine why anyone would consider rebuilding the pump, A new one is very affordable. If memory serves me the bolts are 1/2", the rear one is the difficult one and requires an aircraft wrench AKA a starter wrench. it's bent in a 1/3 circle shape, you will only be able to turn the bolt a small amount before repositioning the wrench.

The last time I changed one it took less than an hour to drain the coolant replace the pump and refill. I did it at a rally.

Good Luck, Tom

Thanks guys, I got all the manuals for my coach so I don't need you to send me those pages.
If it is not worth rebuilding? where can I get a new pump? also is it hard to get air out of system whe you refil?

thanks Geoff

I replaced the pump on my bus about a year ago. I got mine from Luke at US Coach. Apparently there are two types of pumps so make sure you get the correct one. (one is mirror image)

Anyway, everyone is correct about the mounting bolts. You will need to modify a wrench to reach the back one. I had already modified one for other reasons but it worked for this as well.

I bought a open/box wrench with the box end being a 12 point NOT a 6 point. I clamped it in a vice and heated it with a torch. I bent a curve in the handle so it would reach behind to the bolt.

It was an easy change-out with the curved wrench.

Geoff,

Be sure to close the two heating line valves on the LH firewall before draining the system to keep air out of those lines.

There is an air bleed petcock on top of the engine thermostat housing. This is all covered on page 123 of the Maint Manual.

I just did this and the two major problems I had were that both the steel drain plug in the radiator elbow and the air bleed valve were locked up.

I drilled out the steel drain plug, retapped the hole and installed a brass drain valve.

I removed the air bleed valve and replaced it with a new brass one. Brass is the only way to go since it won't corrode like steel.

You can google "florida detroit diesel"

or follow this link http://transdiesel.net/71_series.php

Most any detroit diesel shop will have the pump.

Hey Geoff,

Changing out the water pump isn't that big of deal. I'd make this a priority to get it changed out ASAP. The leak from the "weep hole" is telling you that the seal is bad. It could leak like that for months, or completely fail the next time you crank it.

The main thing is getting your wrench modified. After that, it's pretty much down hill. It takes about 2 hours from start to finish. Below is some things to consider.

1. If your going to try to save your antifreeze, make sure you have enough clean containers to catch it.

2. Check out the thermostat petcocks ahead of time. Make sure they work OK. If they are in bad shape, get replacements (brass) before you start.

3. Back your rig up on ramps to have more ground clearance.

4. Have a couple of gallons of antifreeze to "top off" with.

As far as finding a replacement pump, it shouldn't be hard to find. I replaced ours with a Bepco unit, Cat. No BEP-7103.

Here's the link to a pdf page for it.

Good luck!
