On reviewing the files I see one post that lists the Allison lit and sez this tranny can take 450 ft lbs torque. A few posts later its rated at 650 or so. Was the guts of this unit beefed , or just a paper modification made? The question is to figure out if it will hold a Series 50 upgrade . FF |

Wow, try to find some info online for these! Not easy... This will get you to the publications available from Allison for the MT600 series: http://www.allisontransmission.com/publications/servicesupport_listings.jsp?ModelGrouping= mt No good for now, but this links to the Allison documents, appears to only be current models: http://www.allisontransmission.com/documents/ |

In the Crowns and Gilligs that had the mid-mount engines, when the buses came with the DD 6-71 the automatic that came with it was the MT600 series transmission. If the bus came with the Cummins, the automatic was the MT700 series transmission. Depending upon how high you have the Series 50 turned up, the MT650 may be okay for you. If you think you will be pulling anything I would rethink the MT650. Just my two cents worth. Mark O. Castle Rock, WA |

Since that 50 is DDEC, they should be able to limit the torque output with software tweaking. Also, what is the rpm that the other engine is capable of at the shift points? Hopefully it is pretty close to what the 50 will run.Otherwise you are going to need to change the trans. governor and possibly the valve body. Unless the 50 will bolt right up to the current trans, you might as well change it at the same time. Otherwise you could use it till it starts to fail unless it has a pretty good value used. Allison transmissions are made with a lot of margin of strength and are rated for use with a gvw a lot higher than your coach is going to be. |

Reviewing all the sites , The MT 650 would be too iffy , and the output is only 1-1 , so wouldn't give the mileage advantage of a modern engine, It looks like if a 50 is in the cards , a 5 speed ZF is 1/4 the cost of a World. Would take more miles than I have left to justify a world ! BOY ! is that CAT noisy!! FF |

Just be glad it is out back. The forward control school buses and Blue Bird Wanderlodges can make a person deaf if they are equipped with a 3208. In order to make one really deaf, add a turbo so you can get a high speed whine as well. Mark O. Castle Rock, WA |

Maybe you should consider some other brands of engines for that application unless you get that 50 cheap. |

"Maybe you should consider some other brands of engines for that application unless you get that 50 cheap." OK I'm open to suggestions, SAE 1 or SAE 2? belhousing? SAE 1 is on the HT 7 series trannys SAE 2 is on the existing MT ^ series. FF (Message edited by fast_fred on April 02, 2008) |

Before you consider a ZF trans, you might want to search the blogs. I've heard that some don't care much for them and parts are pretty expensive. How about a 6v-53 turboed with a 6613RTOO roadranger? They sure sound sweet wound up. Of course you have to like shifting gears. Or a DT466 with a mt trans. |

"DT466 with a mt trans." Problem is the 6 is longer than the V8 , and although the Intl is a great engine , it would require a bump out in a nice looking coach. Wonder if one of the new truck stick stick shift engines could be put against a Sae 2/ Some of these new engines are fairly strong and fuel efficient , and I would guess more sport trucks hit trees than class 5's.
