Neat auction site. Too far away for me, though. Couple of Eagles in there too! |

Has anyone actually bought one of these either from Albuguerque or from the public surplus auction? How can I tell which are 35' and which are 40'? (I'm looking for an RTS 40' x 102). I assume the VIN is the key, but where do I look it up. Does anyone live close enough to go look at a bus? or know of a mechanic who could go look? I'm in central Missouri and anything I bought would have to be capable of being driven home (even if it is at 55mph). ...Paul (Message edited by pshadwick on March 06, 2008) |

One thing I can tell you about the Eagle in Houston it is not a 45' bus and it is 96" wide That is true since I have one. I think my unit is #1349. Wow, I am surprised any of these are still in service. They are now 23 years old. I wonder how many Metro has left??. Only one on the link David |

David, they have 11 left used for dock transportation at least that was what I was told they are 85 to 88 models.I took the serial number off a 88 model and could't find the bus no where in the Eagle manufacturing list (Message edited by luvrbus on March 08, 2008) |

Paul, RTS's were made by welding together five-foot sections. A 35 had 7 sections, a 40 had 8 sections. GMC nomenclature was then T70204, T70604, T80204, T80604 (Transit; 7 sections=35 feet / 8 sections = 40 feet; 2 = 102 inches wide, 6 equals 96 inches wide. The 04 in the example above was the fourth model in the series (I bought a fleet of them in the early 80's.) I don't know if TMC and successors kept up with that nomenclature. My copy of the maintenance manual from that fleet also parses the 17-digit VIN. The sixth character from the left being the 7 or 8 as noted above, the seventh character as the 2 or 6 noted above. It also shows that the 8th character, if a J was the 6v92 engine, a W was the 6v71. Does this apply after GM sold the rights / manufacturing of the RTS? I don't know, but perhaps others do. Hope this helps. Arthur |
