I have a mci 9 that I am not raising the roof on. Has anyone used the top escape hatches for the air units?
pro/cons how did you do it

I used the hatch on my RTS, it was fairly easy. With the hatch door gone, you should have a lip above the roof of about 1" (plus or minus), the hatch is about 20x20" roughly, you need to make a hole 14x14, can go as much as 14 1/4 x 14 1/4 but no smaller than 14x14. fill in the hatch area, I used wood, youcan use metal. I did not remove the lip, just build to the top level. The lip will prevent water from getting in if the seal fails. seal with a good roof sealant, I used KoolSeal, and mount your air con.
Its really not that bad of a job. |

The htch opening on an MC9 is 17x24 roughly. It must be framed to 14x14. There is already a steel frame in the cieling to weld your new framing to. You will need to remove the door mounting flange from the roof. Just drill out or grind off the rivets. Once the door is gone and the new hole is framed in, you can reskin over the hole and cut inside your new frame opening. You can use the old door flange as a templater for the new skin. If you are careful about it, you can rivet the new skin to the roof using the same rivet holes that held the door flange.
