I read the following in a bus-for-sale ad recently: "Detroit diesels leak oil (approx. 1 gal. per 1000 miles)." Is this true of all (or most) DD's? 1 gal / 1000 miles seems like a lot. |

As I understand, (and I'm known to be wrong) that is about the most a DD should use and be considered healthy. This does not necessarily mean it is near to needing an overhaul. Love the picture in your profile! Glenn |

"...Love the picture in your profile!" oh, thanks. It's meant to demonstrate just how eager I am to get a "real" bus. |

If that is not a tpyo it is misleading at best. Does he mean burn or leak? As far as leaks many leak much. Ours did when we got it but after going through it we have all but eliminated them. If not used frequentlly enough or allowed to idle, even on high idle, you will loose some out the smaller drip tubes. However I have fashoned catch containers and if emptied after warming up but before a trip nothing more than a trace will develop from that point on. Even a cold start but after a day of significant use will result in no more than a trace. A trip from Chicago to Key West resulted in NO additional oil in the containers. As for burning if not used frequently enough they will burn more. These engines have gotten a bad rap and I believe they are used entirly too infrequently and allowed to idle too often, contributing to that factor The more you run it the less it will use. I'm refering to my experiances 8V92TA. I am a driver by trade hated the thing when we got it but have grown to appreciate it. |

I made the mistake of adding oil when it was 1/2 gallon low on my 8v71. Since then I have learned that if I let it get down below that mark a bit it will stay there. Don't ask me why. If I top it off it blubbers out. Might have to check my dipstick length, jut thought of that. Paul |

Not true....My 4104 bleeds oil cause the condition of the engine is not that great. Bad rings will pressurize the crankcase and blow the oil out of every nook and cranny thats not well sealed. I can drive it 300 mi and have a quart to clean off the back and another quart puddle under it. On the other hand my MC5 I drove to Fl (3000mi round trip) didn't burn or leak a quart of oil. To my knowledge the engine was rebuilt in the mid 80s and has 150000 mi. on it and has been parked for the last 6 years. The oil also stays unbelievably clean. When I checked the oil in Arcadia it almost looked like the day it got changed (honey colored) but just a little darker. losing a gal. every 1000 mi. seems excessive to me. Bob.... |

Thanks for all the input. As usual, it seems like there is no cut-and-dried answer on this one. The ad was for a MC-7 with a 8V71. It says "leak" although maybe he did mean "burn" or a combination of leak and burn? In any case, 1 gal per 1000 miles still seems like a lot. What about after a rebuild? I would assume that there would be no appreciable loss of oil (leak or burn) for some time if rebuilt properly. Correct? With regular use, how long do you suppose it would stay this way? Again, thanks for all the insight. I've got a lot to learn! |

We will BURN 1 gal in 1500 miles. I can not say it does not leak, but darn near. Haven't cleaned it in a year and it is just SLIGHTLY dirty in a couple of spots (really proud of that if you havent noticed) currently 160000 on a DD remanufactured |

Joe,my 8v92 will use a gallon about every 1500 miles if i use Rotella T.If I use Delo 100 it will use a gallon every 1800 miles, but if I use Mobil Delvac it will use a gallon every 2400 or 2500 miles figure that one out |

Bob, You just described my 4104 and 671 exactly!! I've managed to stop a few leaks but others seem to pop up when I do?? |

According to the DD Field service data book on oil consumption. An 8V-71 run at 2300rpm for 10 hours can consume up to 3 qts of oil and still be with in limits. Erik |

Nice bus Bob! I'm glad to hear that it runs so well. I went to the auction inspection, but did not go to the auction itself. Probably good, since I wasn't there to bid against you! Glenn |
