The latest copy of Sport Avation the EAA publication has a dire warning.

Seems that the chemical in an A B C class fire extinguisher contains,

"monammonium phosphate"

which is "highly corrosive to aluminum".

Should one be discharged ,

it "flows into cracks an crevices and can't be washed out".

"To avoid corrosive distruction, the aircraft must be disassembled to manually clean the surfaces right down to the rivets."

Aircraft are aluminum ,

good coaches are aluminum,

their advice is a B-C type extinguisher ,

the chemicals can be washed out.

I always have carried a CO2 extinguisher (no mess to clean up, & I can get it charged free), but thanks for the heads-up!

Funny that this would pop up at this time, as I was just considering replacement of my single co2 one with a larger one and was thinking of adding a dry one for "insurance".....
HA!! 2 co2's will be SOP from now on.
Great heads up Fred thanks again for being on your toes....and sharing! :)

Anyone that puts a D/C extinguisher in his plane deserves to have to disassemble it, because it will also destroy the vacuum instruments,(directional gyro, artificial horizon, etc.), and ruin the contacts on switches, and radios. BUT... if it's all I have handy, and there is an in-flight fire (every pilots nightmare) then I'll use it. From Las Vegas, Cheers...JJ

Where can you buy C02 fire extinguishers? I've seen the mess those chemical types leave and would rather have a "no cleanup mess" extinguisher.
