news report Two men were killed Tuesday when the motor home they were riding in ran off I-85. The motor home was traveling northbound near the line between Jackson and Banks counties at 4:36 p.m. when the driver apparently lost control and tumbled down a 50-foot embankment. The names of the 50-year-old driver and the 41-year-old passenger were not released by authorities. |

additional Both men were thrown through the front windshield of the bus and run over and crushed by the vehicle. The bus then overturned on its right side. Investigators have not released the cause of the accident. However, witnesses on the scene reporting hearing a loud noise similar to a tire blowing out just before the accident. |

Hmmm? Not meaning to be morbid, but it sounds like the proper use of a pair of seatbelts would have saved their lives. Wouldn't be the first person I knew of who didn't wear seatbelts because they didn't want to be trapped in the vehicle, but rather wanted to be "thrown clear to safety"... clear under the vehicle, in this case, apparently. Sad. -Chuck |

I'm a fan of a 5 point harness! I think that the shoulder belts can be quite dangerous if you are not wearing them exactly right or get into an off center collision. Wonder how many older coaches even have shoulder belts? And what would you anchor them to? I think that I will see if I can figure out a way to use a 5 point if possible. Any ideas? jw |

The BEST idea is to do whatever you can right now. Buckle up if you have something, if not get a simple lap belt and use it! Any kind of shoulder belt is better in any event, you can get brain damage (or killed) from knocking your head on the wheel, who cares if I break an arm or shoulder! Best is 5 point, we run Baja racers and toys with them. a small steal loop bolted to the floor works great. The wife wanders around and makes snacks while we go down the road, I am ashamed. I love her much more than that! Peter |

I'm sure curious what would have thown them both through the front windshield. I wouldn't expect a blowout to do that unless the bus ran into some pretty solid object afterwards. If anyone can come up with a way to send condolences, we will do so. We didn't know Jim Stone but we're sorry to hear about the loss of any busnut, especially under those circumstances. Maybe some more information will turn up. Tom Caffrey PD4106-2576 |

My wife was an EMT and an emergency-room & critical-care nurse for a long time. She insisted that the driver & 2 big seats have shoulder harnesses AND that I design & build a dinette with the same! The seats were very expensive and I would have preferred to design my own shoulder restraint. And as much as I protested, I like having my belt on when under-way. The dinette turned out real nice with seats that can face each other or both face forward, reclining backs and, of course, lap/shoulder belts. Sorry for our loss. Joe Shelton 41106-2119 |

It is very sad to hear about Jim! He and I communicated alot when I started my Eagle conversion. He was a great guy to talk to and alot of help! He was the one that told me many times to not give up on it! Very encouraging every time we talked. He had a beautiful bus conversion and it, along with him in it, will be missed very much, not to mention the phone conversations and e-mails we had exchanged! Many Prayers to his family! I have asked for permission to post an electronic "book" of condolences here, to be passed along at an appropriate time. Jim's wife will be back in their Florida home tomorrow. Ian |
