About a year ago I replaced my stock Saginaw, ram style power steering with a Sheppard.I have 72 4108 GMC. I changed the pump and the resevoir to the ones that are supposed to go with the Sheppard, but did not change the stock lines that run the length of the bus. I wonder if those lines are big enough or should I add bigger lines. The Sheppard, now after about 10,000 ,miles gets harder to turn after about 30 minutes of driving. I have bled the system with the front tires off of the ground. What's the diagnosis.

I don't know, so I'm just guessing. What type of fluid are you using? Could it be that it is getting hot and thinning out?

Bill,
My RTS uses 1/2" copper lines for the Sheppard box.My dump truck did the same thing.turned out to be a pressure problem.A new pump solved it.You could probably install a pressue gauge at the supply side of the Sheppard and compare cold and hot pressures.-Donn

Hi Bill,

If your effort when the coach is not moving is increased at idle but is more or less normal with the engine at 1500-2000 RPM, then a worn pump would be my guess.

The usual cause of this when an installation has been changed is that some silica contamination occurred, which results in very rapid wear of pump and valve parts.

Depending on the design of the power cylinder, the wear may not have affected it as much. If the pump is worn, take the trouble to thoroughly clean the entire system before putting the rig back into service. And yes, its a pain.

For what it's worth.
