hey fred or any other wiring gurus
i am wiring my elec tach and speedo and am told that it is aood idea to use shielded wire
1 is there such a thing as stranded shielded wire
2 i am only going 25' so am i worrying to much
3 does the shield have to be connected as a ground to work
i really want to use regular 12 gauge wire cause its pretty complicated routing to get them connected
as always, preciat the help

Wether or not u need shielded wire depends on the manufacturer, some call for it, some don't. I think a lot of this depends on the signal source. My VDO stuff does not need shielded, but other VDO that I have seen is shielded. My former Motorola Speedo rqd. shielded. Also, u do not need 12ga., 16 is usual, and 18 is probably sufficient. Both are available in multi-conductor shielded at most electronic supply places.

I am wiring a VDO tach gauge and the tech at VDO didn't mention shielded wire. I am using a magnetic inductive pickup sender on the bottom of the transmission bell housing that counts flywheel teeth. Couldn't get it to work off the R terminal of the alternator. VDO couldn't tell me the dip switch setting for my Eagle with a miter box.

He did tell me to run the ground from the pickup all the way back to the tach and ground both in the same place. When I get it hooked up I'll let you know how it works. I've been waiting 3 weeks to get the sender from VDO.
Their parts distribution is pretty poor

If your sender has a ground and your tach has a ground, you might want to ground both in the same place, also.

thanks dave
my sender and sensor are amatech and my gauges are dixons so i have opted to just run 16 ga speaker wire im going to just run a short ground to a convienient spot as it seems to me a longt ground wire would act like an antenna and pickup some interferance ill keep in touch and tell you how it works got to do my one weekend a month this weekend so ill probably have it done around wednesday
