"Poor mans Dyno Test"

Just got back from a weekend GMC Classic Motorhome rally - Got to
show all my old friends in the Club my finished RTS
("The GMC Classic Motorhomes BIG liitle brother" - the RTS was the
follow on project to the GMC M/H )

I did remember to bring a stop watch to do my "DYNO TEST" benchmark
I've done this for almost every vechicle I've ever owned - I use it
to check the preformace of my vechicles when I suspect someting is
going wrong or I just want to make sure that everything is still the
same.

The test is very simple - Just press the throttle quickly and record
the times it takes to get to 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 MPH

Here's my vechicle specs
1989 TMC RTS-II Model 06
6V92TA DDEC-ii 277 HP California EPA w/Catalytic converter

Allison V731 3 speed lockup tranny with standard .88 overdrive
shift points
-> 1st to 2nd = 17MPH
-> 2nd to 3rd = 33MPH
-> 3rd lockup = 45MPH

4.10 Rockwell rear end (with the Allison overdrive that equals 3.60
FINAL DRIVE)

24.5 tires (almost the same outside diameter as 22.5 tires)

65 MPH @ 1800 RPMs / 77 MPH top speed @ 2150 RPMs

approx weight 32,000 lbs

conditions:
flat road - 70 degree day - sea level (Daytona Beach. Fl)
Ultra Low Sulfur diesel fuel (loves truck stop) - no a/c or other
loads

RESULTS
0-20 --> 10 seconds
0-30 --> 15 seconds
0-40 --> 24 seconds
0-50 --> 38 seconds
0-60 --> 57 seconds

If I change rear end from my 4.10 to a 5.13 rear -- then I would
expect (5.13 divided by 4.10=1.25 times faster times)

To compare your vechicle to mine divide your final ratio by (my final
ratio of 3.60) and MULTIPLE that valve by my stated timings

OK GUYS -- HOW ABOUT POSTING YOUR DYNO TEST RESULTS ????????????

That is a good idea. It would let you know if something isn't working just right by comparing one time to another. It will be awhile before I can test mine as I am putting in a new fuel tank that I am having made.

Bill, remember to note total weight. These darn coaches tend to gain weight just like us. You know, extra oil, new gotta have tool, new entrance stool, fancier heavier chairs, etc, etc. I'm not even going to get into what mom keeps adding. Then you can factor in why you now have to drop a gear on that hill even though the engine is running great.

John
You got that right. I try to go through the entire bus at the end of each season. It is amazing how many things you can't do without but for some reason you never use them. I can't beat Petes times but at least it will give you a base line for your own unit to compare if you expect a problem.
