I am contemplating a change in transmissions from 5sp spicer to an allison auto. I have a 1960 Flx HiLevel with a 671 Detroit. Any ideas as to which allison auto to put in this bus? Once you get her going down the road she does pretty good. She will cruse all day at and above interstate speeds, so I don't want to loose performance. Any info and ideas will be appreciated..... |

Mike, We need a little more info to give you a good answer. 1. Is your present trans direct drive in 5th, or overdrive? 2. How much driveline length is available? 3. Do you have an SAE 1 or 2 bell housing? If you have room, and off the top of my pointed head, I think a 740 Allison is 37 inches long, there are lots of them around cheap. They are all direct in 4th gear. A 754 is a 5 speed, which will give better performance getting started, with 5th being direct. It is about three inches longer. I think a 600 series will stand up to a 671 in a lighter bus, but if I were going to do it, I would install a 700 if there is room. Someone near their files will probably chime in pretty quick, with the exact specs. Remember you will need an oil cooler, which can be either an oil to air cooler, or your engine oil cooler can be upgraded to a dual cooler. Hope this helps, and good luck! George |

671 inline or 6v71? Lenght of current driveshaft? 644 was used in MCI 5B and 5C ,lenght is 30.5 inches . You will likely have a SAE#1 bellhousing. Get out your tape and start measuring to see what options you have. Joe. |

You need to be concerned with what the trans was designed for when it comes to shift points. I hear it is very difficult to change the shift points after the fact. I used to think an auto was the only way to go, but some shift so harshly that I'm begining to reconsider that thought. |

Loader10, the shift points are not hard to adjust you remove the oil pan and use a tool to rotate the springs each click is 40 rpm and a harsh shift is a trimmer spring adjustment |

IF you can find it with an SAE 1 bellhousing the MT 640 or 654 (with creeper first gear) would handle the 6-71 about 600 lbs and with TV (mechanical) shift , not that hard to set up. The HT 7 series is 1000 lbs , and has the SAE 1 . Both have no overdrive 1-1 is top gear. FF |
