was wondering if anyone could tell me how involved and/or expensive it would be to install cruise control on an 88 MCI 102A3 with a 692 Detroit with a 4 speed Allison transmission.

If you have an air throttle, you can connect a "car type" cruise to the forward end of the throttle pedal. Otherwise it's the big bucks for a truck cruise (King Cruise), that has the strength to operate the governor shaft.

At least one Board contributor has a moderately priced cruise unit available.

If the unit is DDEC 2 or later, its built in. You will have to run some wires up front, and install the switches.

I have the diagram if you like.

Dick,
I have a DDEC II in my 102A3. I would like to check out the wiring diagram. Will the ECU need to be programed to use the cruise control?

Hi

If you have a DDEC engine - take your engine serial number to your local D/D dealer and ask to have the DWEER (Detroit ? engine Equipement Report) printed out for your serial # (hopefully no one swapped DDEC's on you). This report will tell you if your cruise control is turned on / top speed / pulses per mile / etc - If the dealer has to set the options - usually big $$ - I don't know at this time if a PROLINK will be able to set the ddec-ii cruise parms / hopefully i'll find an inexpensive ddec-1/2 cartridge and try my newly acquired EBAY PRPLINK 9000

There is an alternative - and I just happen to sell it ;-) - see--> http://busnut.com/classifieds/index.php?a=2&b=131

the quick install method is only 4 connections (ign - ground - speed+ brake) - mounts up front and pull the throttle - under $200

There are also others out there for non DDEC but with Pete's unit, if you have trouble getting it to work or have installation questions, you can contact or talk to Pete who will help you work it out instead of some bimbo in India or China that barely speaks English or doesn't know what the H**L you're talkin about or puts you on hold forever.

Pete and others, my H3 model is DDEC equipped and with my pro-link I can set the parameters myself. I don't think I was supposed to be able to but I just happened to hit a 4 digit password that allowed me to go in and do what I want! What's the chance of that? In fact, it was the first series of numbers I tried and to be honest it was the same 4 digits my cell phone came with when new. Of course I could change the password afterwards and the same goes for the Pro-Link though I chose to keep the same one!
Also a note to Pete. I found the cartridge for I think 400 bucks from an outside source different than DD! If you ever need to borrow it, let me know! Hopefully I'm done using mine for a while for fixing things but I WILL use it when we travel!
And Pete if you want the source I got mine from, I'll have to look it up for you! It was the cheapest I had found and I looked for about 2 years!

By the way, Manny loves his cruise control. Now if he could only get some technical help hooking it up so it will work. Hey maybe if you get it working for him, he will plan another trip for us over here soon! :-)

Ace

Manny seems to have a unusual electronic speedometer hook up - floating inputs ??

I pointed Manny to the diagnostic Rostra proceedure that let him use the internally mounted test led to verify all his connections.

He hasn't (as of the last time I checked with him) - gone thru the part where he lets the coach roll foward to verify speedo pulses - I believe he has a floating ground speedo (if he does - than one leg of the sender (usually the shielded one should be attached to ground) - I believe Jack Conrad had the same tpye problem.

I'm waiting for Manny to get back to me with the results of his test -
