Howdy, all. Ive been reading alot of great info on the site. I am shopping for my first classic coach, looking at a '53 PD4104 tomorrow. Time and again, the learned advice is to "get a thourough inpection".

Anyone know a good mechanic/shop around Chehalis / Olympia area?

I'm trying my best to put together my own buyer's checklist from the various posts, but it sure would be nice to find a greasemonkey who knows the coach. (1 shop said, "sure, it takes 30 minutes...")

Also, any PD4104 specific advice or tips are greatly welcomed.

Thanks,
Adam

If you call a mechanic a grease monkey you might not get one. :-)

Y'know, as a former 4104 owner and big fan, I can't think of anything peculiar to the 4104 to watch for.
Not prone to cracked bulkheads or any other structural problems that I know of. There are lots of things that can be worn out, broken, not maintained etc., etc., but nothing specific to the 4104. It was a remarkably overbuilt machine.
Now, as to what people might have done to it over the past 55 years, there's no telling.

I guess the air beams are subject to leaking, especially if run in salty conditions but that has most likely been dealt with.

If it has been converted to integral power steering, has had spring brakes added, and the tail gate is not rusted out, you are pretty much ahead of the game.

You will have a hard time finding someone who knows old buses or even the 2 cycle Detroits.

Call some of the local charter companies and see if they know any old timers who can help you.

Kent at Kent's Custom Diesel in Longview (360-575-8884) really knows 2-cycle DD's.

He also knows a little about motorcoaches and their systems.

You may want to give him a call.

Most of the commercial bus work and private as well goes to Courtrite Diesel in Tacoma. They have a bus in the shop just about everyday, so they know buses. 253.383.4888.
