my wife and I decided LONG ago - that the water stored in RV tanks should not be used for drinking - we rarely use bottled water at home - but we do in the RV We wash the dishes in the sink with a little bit of bleach added to the rinse water. we clean our tanks with a cup of bleach per 100 gallons of water - let it sit for a few days -drain and refill | ||

We put a quarter cup of bleach for each 15 gallons, drive it down the road for a few miles, then open each faucett till we smell the bleach, leave it alone for 24 hours, drain it all out, fill up, drain that through each faucett and fill up again. We do it once a year in our S&S. No problems in 3 years. Hope that helps. | ||

All of the info above is good for one time or one time a year to clean the tank. After that we add one 16 oz bottle of Hydrogen Peroxid to the tank. I have been doing this for years and all over the country, Mexico and Canada. We drink and make ice with the water in the tank and never had a problem. The Hydrogen Peroxid leaves no tast in the water and is safe to drink. When it is on sale we stock up and keep it in the coach. Jack | ||

I am POSITIVELY with Pete....We fill our tanks, all, with unsoftend water, use a bit of bleach as it flowing into the tanks, and DO NOT drink the water from the tanks. We do use it for washing dishes, showers, brushing teeth,etc, but buy water by the gallon from WM or wherever for drinking and cooking, making ice, etc. We always flush tanks after draining ( including black and grey) with bleach.....it is cheap and has ( knock knock) never let us down yet.... Iver, If you clean and disinfect the tank as JH and JC recommend above, you won't have any problem. If you don't use all the water, drain and refill the tank every month or two. If your tanks don't get warm from the sun, I've drank water well over a month old with no filter, and it tasted as good as when filled. Next time you drink bottled water, check the recycle date on it. Millions of RVers drink the tank water all the time. Generally if you get foul taste, it is the water source, not the tank. If necessary, a number of filters are available from simple sediment type of filter that will remove sand and pollywog's, to filters that will make the worst Mexican water hole drinkable. Whatever your taste buds prefer and can afford. | ||

We rarely use the water for drinking but just want it as clean as possible. Most "bottled water" is just tap water, so you are paying more per gallon for water than most pay for diesel. Tank water varies greatly in taste (quality is checked by the local govs) so flush the tank a few times and fill up with GOOD tasting water. It will have chlorine in it anyway , so most will last 2 or 3 months in any tank and water system that is LIGHT Proof. FF. |
