I finally installed my Onan 7000 Marquis in the bus last night! I put the fuel line in a fresh container of gasoline, attached kick cables to my bus batteries and started it up. I noticed the smell of stale gas as it started (guess it has been longer than I thought since it was last cranked). After starting it ran smooth for a few moments then started pulsing from wide open to idle. This pulsing happens about every 3 seconds. If I hold the choke partially closed it will run smooth and the AC voltage is correct, indicating to me not enough fuel. When the generator had been running for about 5 minutes a tapping/clicking noise started similar to a fan hitting a guard. I traced this noise and it's corresponding vibration to what I believe to be the fuel pump. This is a cannister shaped device about the size of a soup can at the back of the unit. The incoming fuel line, fuel line to the carburator(sp?), and two electrical wires attach to this device.
Is this the fuel pump? Should I try to take it off and clean it? Is that the cause of the fuel starvation? This is a new/salvage unit that I have run several times in the past months sitting on 6" X 6" posts in the floor of the building with no problems.
Thanks for all the help I get on this board.

Tom, yes the cannister is the fuel pump, and the surging is probably initiated by an air leak in the fuel line, trapped air in the fuel pump, or the pump diaphram is a bit stiff from being "asleep" for a while.(A bit of all of the above?) DON'T PANIC! I recently bought one when I was in San Diego, that had been in storage, and went thru the same symptoms. Use the choke and 'force-feed it' and it should clear up shortly. BTW,that pump is mfg. by Facet, and is a mega-buck item from Onan. Get a generic replacemant at your local autoparts store, but get one that only has a 3 to 4 psi output,( or use a pressure regulator to limit it, or the carb will leak fuel. (externally and internally). Cheers...JJ

Thanks JJ,
I will run the generator more tonight to see if it clears up.

Tom
The pump should have a twist off fitting on the bottom of the pump. Inside is a fine screen filter that may be clogged

I started the generator again last night and it ran perfect for over an hour. As JJ said it just needed to be run.
Thanks guys for all the help.

Hi Guys,
I recently accquired an MCI8 with an old Onan 6.5 genset. It needed TLC so I went to the following link to get parts and info.
