What is it going into? From the sound of it, you're working on a skoolie - an Allison AT530 would work very well - most older school buses had them. I can't think of a single book that goes into all medium and heavy duty manual transmissions - I went to school for diesel mechanics, and spent an entire 3-week course just on manual transmissions for medium/heavy trucks - and another 3-week course on Allisons, and a 3 week course on automotive transmissions... ther service manual for the specific transmisison is a good guide, but I don't know of any "all-in-one" transmission guide.

Nah, it's the right forum. I guess you've got a V-drive? That's tough - I only know of one person near where I live that knows how to work on them. Maybe someone who knows more about transits will add something.

I'd call a few medium/heavyduty truck salvage yards and see what they have to say. You should probably get all the model and serial numbers from the ID tag of the tranny you have...for starters.

Bruce, while you're at it, this might be the time to find out if you have a 2 or 4 valve DD. A 4-71 doesn't have much power, so you might want to upgrade if you have to stay with that size engine.
