Not going to make a big deal but just had to let this out. My dad turns 87 tomorrow but right now were in ICU and he is fighting to stay alive. Going in for emergency surgery on his belly to repair a rupture that started from something else. Bottom line is, I told my dad I loved him and was proud of what he has been thru. I told him I would be sure to find him on the other side and we could continue our great life that we shared again. I told him to look for my mom and she would take care of him in the meantime along with Gods help! I told him not to worry about me here on earth because Susan will see to it that I'm ok!
Man just the other day we were talking buses!
Now we wait!

Ace sorry to hear about your Dad. Family is what it is all about but in these days it seems we have lost that. Good luck and God bless you and your family.

Sorry to hear, Ace. (Recently been through something like that myself.) Best wishes to you all. Sounds as if you've done about all you can do and you've done it well.

Our prayers are with you and your father, Ace. As I got older, I started to dread the time when my parents would "move on". I'm glad to have had the memories of being with both of them over the years, and it makes the loss less painful as time goes on. It's great that you were and are able to spend the hours and days together with your parents. Wishing and hoping everything goes well for you and your father.

Ace,

What a pleasure to hear a son tell his father he loves him. "Guys" just don't do those things; it's not "Manly" I guess. Whatever happens, you will be forever thankful you said it. From those who might not have had the courage, you're a big man Ace.

Hi Ace,

I can tell you from my experience in having dealt with end stages of life for many years, the fear of leaving is not as great as the fear of getting there. It is much easier when the unwell hear they are well loved by those around them.

You have shown great compassion in dealing with your dad under these circumstances. You can be at peace knowing that he is immeasurably grateful having you as his son while he takes his journey to eternal peace.

Maisie and I have you both, and your families, in our prayers.

Thank you everyone for the kind words, prayers, emails, phone calls and thoughts!

An update to my dad is, he has recovered enough to be discharged and transported back to the rehab facility where he resides. The doctor tells me everything is great so far including the surgery. They have been a little concerned about his eating. He hasn't been eating a lot. Could be that the food is pureed or just because it's hospital food but at least he is eating up to 50% of his meals. Susan visited him yesterday and reported to me that he looked very good and spoke clearly and appeared stronger than ever.
Going back to the rehab facility today at 5pm is great. It shows that he is in deed (per the doctor) a tough ole goat and I just wish I was half as tough!

Thanks again EVERYONE!

By the way, if I missed answering an email here and there, it was not done purposely! It's just been a very trying period!

Ace - great to hear the news - When my dad was in the hospice and most recently when mom was in the hospital on the way I would stop at Steak and Shake and get them a Milk Shake (real milk and ice cream not frozen yogurt) everytime - Lots of calories and they really loved them (of course the doctor must approve) - HTH

Update on my dad!

It's been just shy of 2 months since he had emergency abdominal surgery and all that went very good considering. He returned to the rehab facility where he resides full time and upon doing so he had a few open sores from being in bed so long. One very bad one was on his already bad foot. It was determined that it would never get better because his right leg had gone into a contraction which means it was always in a bent position. It would not or could not be straightened and NO medication of any kind would get to the wound. Being diabetic meant that the leg would have to be removed. First they thought below the knee but after further thought it was better to remove it above the knee since the knee was locked anyway. And so it was! They removed the right leg today at about 2pm and tonight I am very happy to say that once again, my Dad, who has beat many odds, and in the many doctors eyes, is tough as a goat is doing VERY well and resting comfortably. They prognosis is he should return as early as Friday to the nursing home and get back to doing what he used to do only slower. He wants an electric scooter so he can get to bingo down the hall. A red, white and blue one at that!
Thanks again for all the prayers and kind emails and phone calls! Believe it or not, they all help!

Well here it is, Fathers Day! What a special day for me! It's been a really emotional roller coaster ride the last few months.
I am very happy to announce my dad is almost 100% considering everything he has been thru. He is able to eat on his own, comb his hair, wash himself, wheel himself around in his wheelchair and best of all, uses his phone to call me! Yea he's 87 and considered old but I don't care! Hearing his voice and seeing him smile is enough to say I'm proud to be his son!
He's not ready to quit or give up and that is an inspiration to move on and live today as if it were your last!
I guess what I'm trying to say to each and every one of you is, I know some have dad's and some don't. Take this special day to spend time with them either together or in thought! Remember nobodies perfect and if some of your memories are not the best, put it behind you! Get over those times and live on! Life is too short to hold grudges! God gave us one ticket for this ride so enjoy every bit of it and if you can share it with your dad, there's no better time than now!

I also want to say with deep regrets that this has to be the worse time for Paula Conrad (Jack's wife). She lost her dad yesterday and is on her way to see him for the last time. All of you sent prayers to me for my dad when he wasn't expected to live but those prayers worked. My dad is alive and well. Let's all send those prayers to Jack and Paula. It won't bring her dad back but it will sure help her and Jack to know we are here! I know it made me feel better when I was down!
Again, Happy Fathers day to all you Dad's and Dad's of Dad's!
This is certainly your special day! Enjoy it! I know I will! ;)

Ace
