I have a 6.5 Onan thats acting up. It will start & run ok for maybe 5 minutes and then starts to cycle back and forth ruf to smooth. Add another 2-3 minutes and it starts knocking when it runs ruf and then back to smooth. Under load is worse and it will kick-off line and quit. Was told by shop that it may be carbon under one or both heads OR it is a bearing. Any ezee way to tell if its carbon or bearing? It's pretty old & I'm thinking of the bone yard and look for a newer used. Joe 4106-2119 |

Try slowly pouring a few onces of water into the carb inlet while the unit is running. If carbon is the problem this usually will remove it. I do mine once a year as a dealer instructed. Hope this helps |

Hi Joe, Try this place before you scrap that old machine. I just got a genset that is the same as yours, from the late 70s. I called them and the guy was very helpful. I got a new users and a new service manual along with a new carb and some filters. There's an online help BBS that has a ton of good info if you keep scrolling back to older posts. Most all posts are answered by the Onan guys. http://www.funroads.com/service/onangenset.jhtml Craig S |

NAPA is now a source of parts/filters etc. ,at something less than Onan/Cummins astronomical prices. Look for a gasket leaking air into the intake or the carb float area. This will often cause the surging. (lean mixture) Use a household pump sprayer (bath/kitchen cleaner)for you water spray. C...JJ |
