I am looking for a muffler for my mc5c. Is there a good place to get one? One bus parts man said he thought an mc9 and an mc5 muffler were the same. The numbers looked the same but the mc 9 was less than half the price! thanks Rod |

Don't know about a 9 being the same for a 5C. I just replaced the one on my 5A. MCI wanted a grand for one. They are kinda strange because they have a 5" inlet and a 4" outlet both on the same end of the muffler which means that my tailpipe is right back by the rear bumper. I have scraped it a time or two going in and out of places so i was interested in changing it if i could. I ended up getting a Donaldson muffler thru a truck parts shop, (just over $200), that has a 5" inlet on one end and a 5" outlet on the other end which moved my tailpipe to just behind my rear tire. Had to redo one support as the muffler is a few inches shorter but it has worked out well. Did a decible test before and after and with the shorter muffler it is only 10 db's louder at 3 ft. away. Could just be my imagination but with the 5" outlet it seems that i feel a little difference in throttle response,.... Less back pressure letting the engine perform a little better? Try googling Donaldson and look at what they have.....make sure to measure everything at least twice if not more. :>) |

Ed, did you stay with the 5" outlet or reduce it to the original 4" and use the fishtail tailpipe? I have a new Donaldson muffler which I'm going to install on my 5A but plan to find a 5" -4" reducer and try and use a fishtail.
I'd be concerned about a lack of proper back pressure if I went 5" all the way through.

Bob, i stayed with the 5" outlet and so far it seems to be fine.....and it sounds real nice. I could not find a 5 and 4 anywhere i looked. Most of them are all the same size ie, 5 and 5, 4 and 4, etc. If i did see any others it seems like the inlet was smaller than the outlet which makes sense. Having the outlet smaller than the inlet just seems odd to me.....why would anyone want more back pressure? Have you ever seen that on any other 8v71's? Mufflers have different flow rates and i tried to find one with a good rate of flow that would fit the space available. I did flatten the end of my tailpipe a little just to give it a bit more ground clearance. :>) |

Ed, the Walker site offers 5" to 4" adapters in, I believe 4" length.
Whether or not you believe it DD's are very back pressure sensitive. Generally speaking they're more concerned with too much B/P than not enough but not enough will make them run snotty as hell.

I have a new old stock Nelson muffler. 5 in and 5 inch out but on opposite ends. I would like to get 40.00 for it and its in NW PA. Thanks Tom Y |

I just got off the phone with "LUKE" and he says a 5 and a 9 are the same muffler. $398.00
