My muffler is the big round one that is behind the rear axle but in front of the motor. I have two questions.

1.How do you get to the bracket that supports the muffler

2. Because a new muffler is pricy what have some of you done instead of replacing with new.

To get to the muffler there is a removable piece of floor above the muffler that must be opened from the inside of the bus. It ook mine to a welder and had him weld a bunch of new baffles and reinforce the outside with some new steel. It has been there 15 years with no problems.

GM mufflers are rebuildable providing the ends are in good shape

A lot of the 4905's, at least, have the muffler mounted vertical by the left of engine in engine compartment, right inside the engine door by the radiator fan shroud. Some have voiced concern for a fire starting in your muffler location if a hole in the upper end blows exhaust against floor. Apparently, this has happened. The problem with the alternate location at the rear is obstructed access to fan and water pump area. Your muffler hangs by a large stud with rubber grommets similar to the end of the older shock absorbers. You may be able to unbolt the channel that the stud goes through from below, however I'm unsure about this point.

If it's ideas you're looking for you might wish to check with Florida Cliff who is on vacation at this time but left a pretty detailed description and pictures of the dual muffler system he installed on his 4905. I can't be sure but I think most of what he did is posted on the MAK board. a simple search of their archives should help. Too he listed the Mfr. of the mufflers he used and Rock Auto, the jobber who quoted him the best prices.

FWIW
