I have an Allison 5 speed in a 1990 Prevost. Is the pad supposed light up with the instrument lights? The red dot lights up with/without the instrument lights being on. Also, the transmission was unresponsive when trying to put into gear. It finally did engage after several attempts. I turned off the jake brake and then it went into gear. It was recently serviced and was found to be 2 quarts low, fluid was added. there have been no problems until today! HELP, Bob

Bob sounds like it picked up a code. It could be a real situation or it could just be a hickup. I don't know how your coach flashes the engine and transmission codes, but my 89 Eagle has a test switch on the dash. If I hold the switch down it will flash the trans codes and if I hold it up it will flash the engine codes. The trans codes are 2 digit numbers, like 21 or 35 etc. Once you read the codes they can be cleared by holding the test switch in the trans position and selecting R N R N on the pad and the codes are gone and your tranny will work like new again.

It is not necessary to read the codes before clearing them if you choose.

My HTB748R will code out for no reason about once every thousand miles.

Bob, your shift should have an internal light, sealed into the unit (not an external bulb socket). There should be two wires in your shifter harness that should go to ground and your panel light circuit. On my shifter harness, (WTEC III 6 speed) I found the wires doubled back and taped off in the harness. The shift pad itself is usually a sealed one piece unit that you cannot get into (they are rebuildable though by sending to Allison I think). So the internal pad lighting is "lifetime". There must be a circuit problem downstream from there. I would give you the lighting wire color/number, but my trans is different from yours. Hope this helps.

Not sure it makes any difference BUT

My Allison manual says:

Ttest switch in test position - select reverse, stay in reverse for a couple of seconds, then return to neutral

Code 21 may take multiple ignition on/off to clear the self calibration of the throttle position sensor (TPS)
