From my experience, if severely overheated, the heads most likely will be cracked- have them properly checked for this; usually the crank and bearings aren't hurt, but the block will need to be checked for cracks in liner areas and will probably require new piston and liner kits. The block bores will need checked for warpage and lightly honed or cleaned to remove varnish from cooked oil. It may require precision honing and oversize liners for a proper job as the liner to block fit is critical for heat transfer. Don't just take it to any shop; find one experienced in two cycle Detroits. Remember, your engine is a left hand unit, so a non GMC engine will require extra labor to change over from right hand to left hand rotation.

Well.... when they sieze a piston its usually just one! Usually as soon as they cool off, you can get them to start and run home.

The piston will knock like a rod knock but you can usually run some miles unless its cracked or has a hole in it.

Labor will kill you to repair your engine so get another one.

Labor to reverse a RH engine will kill you too. That's a major operation.
If your engine is trashed, IMHO, the least expensive, and most ASAP repair will be with a good used GM takeout. The hard part is establishing "good" motors from really bad motors.
If a dealer begins to dismantle your engine, get your wallet out! A worse case could run to $15K.
I wouldn't let anyone perform any repairs, other than a resonable attempt to establish what has failed. Then you can fly mama back home, and form a game plan.
If the motor won't bar over, find another motor.
Rebuilding and engine when 2500 miles from home is a bad idea. Be ready to stand there and tell the guys how the engine cradle is removed. The new guys just don't know these things. They know how to charge $100 bucks and hour...which I have no problem with as long as they are productive and knowledgeable. Rare.
I'll bet the shop would rather you pay them to swap in another motor than to get involved in rebuilding an 8V71.
A good takeout could be installed in a day or two.
Maybe you'll get lucky and find some minor issue...hope so!
May I suggest you have some alarmastats installed in your new engine...they'll save your bank account.
Don't forget to fix the cooling system fault!
JR
