I have a 1963 GM 4106. I am wanting to replace my 22" steering wheel with a 18" and it has a tapered shaft with a 3/16 key slot the tapered end starts at 1.030 and increases to 1.130. Does anyone know of an adaptor so I can get a standard steering wheel or where I can get one that fits?

Hi Bob.
Think long & hard before replacing that 22 with an 18. Better yet, disable your power steering & drive around the block. We have lost our power steering going down a steep hill around a hairpin bend and I wondered if we'd make it with the 22" wheel!

I'm not sure but try a place called Relative to Motion they have after market truck steering wheels not sure about how their adapters work or maybe a crome shop near a truck stop they might can help I don't have the exact link now for the R-T-M site but you should be able to google it also on large crome shop that might could help is I-75 Crome Shop in Wildwood, Fl.

But think hard about that posable lose of power steering. I probably would do it because I am thinking of it also for my MC9 but I'm a big ole boy.

FACTORY power steering uses a different ratio box in the steering column so is a bear with power off.

BUT it is less cranking to get lock to lock.

A small wheel will mostly be a problem in city traffic and at tight camp sites.

i adapted a 20 inch to mine but am thinking about putting the big wheel back on, i have a sheppard steering and there is no way to turn if the power steering was to go, id recomend thinking about it long and hard, there is a company called VP that has the smaller wheels and adaptors.

I like the big wheel on my bus. Aside from it looking "right" for the bus it feels good in my hands.

The look on a childs face when they sit in the drivers seat is priceless. The parents will often want a photo of their kid behind the wheel.

If the wheel attaches the same as the 4905's, they had different wheel diameter options ( at least two, as my two have different diameters- 20" and 22") and no, I don't want to sell my 20, which I replaced the 22 with. 22 inchers are for boats, Fred's bus, manual steering, and weirdo's that have a fettish for big wheels. :-) just kidding guys. Anyway, maybe one of the guys that are parting out their busses have a 20 incher for sale. Don't worry about the steering going out; two inches aren't going to make THAT much of a difference. Anyway, the adrenalin will help make up the difference.

when the front tire on the drivers sidr blow at 55 m/h it was all i could do to hold it on the raod and it went across 3 lanes real quick. i was wishing that the wheel was 30 in, but then again i am only6-1 and 225# and have word on the farm for a lot of years. so that may explain why other people figure that they have the arm strength to be able to hold the bus on the road with an 18 wheel, so i am with fred, leave the wheel that was put in by GM, they hadsome good eng. that worked on that modle. also if my math is correct 22-18 =4 not 2. last but not least some where in my past i rember hearing [2 more inches sure would be nice] after all these years it sure would be nice to think she was talking about the steering wheel in the car.

My 04 has an 18 inch vip wheel, which is nice when getting into the seat, but I personally would prefer the 20 incher, as the 18 takes a little more effort to turn, even with Sheppard steering. I suppose with a 22 inch wheel, one could steer with the belly while eating a sandwich and using the cell phone.Mel, does yours have power steering?

yes i have a shepardunit in my 4104, after that blow out on the front tire when i got home i put in the shepard unit and a tilt- telescoping steering wheel.the dumb part of it was i had these units on the shop floorand just did not put it in until nearly to late.and even with the power steering it will only hold you little straighter going off the road and the bigger the wheel the better chance you have of keeping it straighter. just watch the side of the roads and see where the 18 wheelers have hit the ditches and they all have power steering on the units and good sized wheels. it is not when you are driving down the highway and every thing is going good thatyou need the big wheel it is when the unexpected happens such as a blow out. yes i know people will say- my tires are new and in good shape- well when you run over a object on the road that punches a hole your tire even new tires blowout.so my advice to those that like the small wheel look think about the people riding with you or coming at you in their vec. i am sure that the lawyers out there will have a real good time in court talking about the small wheel.
