I'm almost at a point where I need to take my coach other places for stuff I am unable to do myself and want to get it registered as a RV. My problem is this: when I got the bus it was on 'non-op' registration. When I went to the DMV they gave me a couple forms, one that stated that the coach was converted and another that verified the VIN, etc. When I asked later if the state would accept my word that the coach had been converted I was told that the state (California) would need to inspect it first. The other form must be filled out by a peace officer, etc so that is out of my hands. My question is, does California in fact need an eyeball check to get my coach registered as an RV or will they take my word that it is in fact a conversion in the works and not a coach for hire? |

They probably will want to inspect it. But that does not mean that the conversion must be complete. Find out what they are looking for. It could just involve removing all the seats, putting a mattress, table, and camp stove inside. Don't forget a plaque that says "Home Sweet Motorhome". |

I purchased my bus in NJ last Aug. and had no problem registering it in Ca.. The peace officer needs to check the Vin. and fill out the form for registering an out of state vehicle. They came to my house. At the time of registration I told them I was converting the bus into a motor-home. They took my word for it and it's now an RV. The seats should be out when the peace officer checks the Vin. Hope this helps, Wayne |

Thanks guys, I'll give it a try. I am already past the seats out stage so this may do it. Dale |

You'll probably get a different answer each time you ask the question. If in doubt, throw in a mattress, porta-potti and a wash basin. My bus was already registered (actually says 'auto' on the rego) when I bought it. But the guy I bought it from just told DMV it was a conversion in progress. It was a seatless shell at the time.
