My Model 05 Eagle has an Allison HT740 and I've been parked for a month in DC. Gonna start back to Texas this week, and it seems the A/T fluid is way, way up on the stick. I've checked it over the months and it's always been full; but perhaps it's over-full! I had it serviced about 12k miles ago (a year) when they changed it out to Trans-Synd. Should I drain some of the excess???? Can I save it to re-use? At $50/quart or whatever they charged me seems too precious to waste. Thanks | ||

Doyle The transmission should be checked with it hot and ideling in neutral. By the way we are having the TEXAS BUS ROUNDUP 9/11 thru 14 at Eisenhower State Park, Would like to see you there, there are about 5 or 6 of us that have Eagles. Catskinner! Doyle, When an AT is not running all the fluid drains down into the pan. When it is running the AT pump fills all the channels (It looks like the inside of an ant farm)in the AT with fluid and the pan level drops. This is the reason you always check it after the engine has been running for a while and the AT has been used. In other words, after you drive the bus a while or at least run it a while while in gear. | ||

Doyle, After sitting that long all that fluid in the converter drains back to the pan.Start it up run it to temp then check it.Cars will do the samething after sitting some will actually leak out of the front seal. Consider yourself lucky, being parked for a month in the DC area and you still have a bus to check the fluid in. I lived in the area for 50 years and ain't missed it yet. How far north did you get on your venture? Remember I am in Murrells Inlet(Myrtle Beach) if you get close on the way back. Rebel says to say Hi to Coffee ! Doyle, As was mentioned, check with engine running, in neutral. Trans should be warm (although your dipstick may have 2 full marks, Hot & Cold). With transmission warm, shift into all gear positions first to fill all passages in the transmission. Obviously, the bus should be sitting level. Jack PS: Tell Coffee Hi from us. | ||

Thanks to all! Yeah, When I get on the road, I'll check 'er hot. I still think it's over-filled. Is there any danger from running over-full? If it is over, I've been doing it for many miles. I ended up as camp host at the Lake Fairfax County park right in Reston for the month of July. Saved a grand on space rent here ($34.00 per nite) and haven't bought diesel in 6 weeks! The last was at $4.67 and that seems to be the current price =/- a penny or two. Coffee is doing great... she's got her "Service Dog" costume and goes on the Metro and to all the sights with me. At Sam's or Costco, I'll tell her to lay on the floor and wait while I fill the basket, then she's ready to go when I'm done. She gets lots of exercise every day while I ride the little electric Schwinn scooter and she chases "squirrels" in her mind. We're going to go through W.Va, Tenn, Miss, Ark, La and back to Austin, Tx. for a couple of weeks then to El Paso for Labor Day and football season. Best, dg | ||

Doyle, if it is overfilled it will run hot even with the $10 a quart transynd so check your temps (Message edited by luvrbus on July 28, 2008) | ||

The reason you don't want to overfill automatic transmissions, is that it will foam the fluid. Foamed fluid does not lubricate well. Slight overfill is probably not a problem. Ed Roelle Flint, MI | ||

One other thing. The torque converter depends on the mass of the oil to pass power to the transmission. This means that oil that is two thirds oil and one third air will not transmit as much power at the same speed. So, more throttle will be needed to get work done and the difference in work between the the two conditions will all turn to heat in the transmission. For what it's worth. Tom Caffrey | ||

FWIW, if you overfill a V730, you will know about it. The coach will be very sluggish on power, unable to make full speed with a modest powerplant, and run hot. I wouldn't expect an overfilled 740 will perform any differently. happy coaching! buswarrior | ||

Took off the tranny filter and drained what must've been 2 quarts. It's at the proper level now. I still thought it was way underpowered until I realized it was a 9% grade in WV... loves to pull any hill, just not fast! dg |
