CW,

I couldn't fine out the source of power either - spent a bit of time on it and decided to simply remove them. I tried putting power directly to them after I took one out and still couldn't get them to glow. So I assumed they were shot. From everyone's input it turns out that they are quite expensive to replace and repair. Mine are gone... I figured I could put some LED strips in if I really want some glowing light up there... Let us know how you make out.

I have an 87 Model 15. My strips are there but don't work right now. There is supposed to be a power module called an Inverta-Pak in the compartment under the driver's seat. Mine was gone when I got the bus. I understand they work on 400HZ AC and will NOT work on normal AC or DC. Craig at Eagle bus will know how they work and likely can supply any parts needed to get them going.

Yes Guys, If you look at the post I did in the past the nubmers are 400Hz 115V. Here is the link to the post:

Exactly as we are saying - LED's would be smartest / cheapest fix.

All this got me thinking (and surfing). Look what I found! Scroll down to the "single phase" unit.

The only thing we don't know yet is if this converter will power the luminous panels. If anyone has an operative unit, maybe we can figure out the current draw of the dash panels? At $119. this unit is affordable enough to keep the system in place.

I am not personally familiar with the Eagle dash lighting, but it sounds like folks are talking about electroluminescent (EL) strips. These are pretty common for illuminating aircraft cockpit panels.

Now a days the EL stuff is becoming pretty commonplace for lighting up watch faces and backlighting car instrument panels, as well as decorative stuff. It is available is many different colors, and comes in 1" strips, wider panels, and a flexible rope-like wire.

If you buy from an aircraft supplier the stuff is super expensive. Instead, shop eBay or run some internet searches. On eBay try a search on "EL panel -Camino" (The -Camino gets rid of the El Camino car parts)

EBay also has electrical converters that run on 12VDC and make the required AC juice for the EL strips. Under $20.

Enjoy

But how many amps/watts does the Eagle dash array require? We need to know that to be sure these converters are large enough. And $20. sounds way better than $120!

Yes you want to make sure there is sufficient amps to drive the Eagle dash strip(s), but my gut feel is this shouldn't be too tough. The EL strips and panels are very efficient, generating almost no heat.

You can buy light-up costumes with 2 meters of EL rope/wiring built into them that are powered of a pair of AAA batteries with an inverter, so that tells me the power draw can't be all that great.

I saw specs on one EL strip (white) that was 40 inches long by 2.375 inches wide and the current draw was 84 mA.

If I was trying to do this I would take a look at what is in the Eagle and see if I could estimate the the square inches of it's lighting strip(s). Then I'd do more research on typical mA draw per square inch of several other panels, apply a safety factor, and try it.

Well I was hoping that someone had one of the original Inverta-Paks and that just maybe it had a input/output rating on it like the "wall wart" transformers do.
