Hello.
I am considering buying a 1989 MCI MC-9 Special Edition with a 6V92TA, Fuller 5 speed, and very good tires 12R22.5. I have the exact same bus (1989 Canadian Military MC-9 SE) and I am thinking about buying this second bus as a parts bus.

It (the parts bus)is in very good condition, has 600,000 documented miles, there are alot of new parts on it. It runs great.

Please - what is your oppinion? Is there a good market for used MC-9 parts? I will be paying about $15,000 for the parts bus, some of the parts I plan to keep such as: a few tires/rims, and the radiators.

I think the 6V92TA engine, Fuller 5 speed, the blower/squirril cages, blower gear box, A/C compressor (new), alternator, windows, seats etc. should be worth close to $15,000 if parted out?

Why don't you keep the parts bus if you have room to keep it, It is when you sell it that you are going to need a part. If you don't have room to keep the whole bus how about striping it to the bare shell and selling the shell for scrap metal. Just some ideas

Hello, Yes I have considered stripping it and scrapping the shell. I estimate a shell weighs about 8 to 10 tons which will net me about $2,000 in scrap.

What do you think the parts are worth?

I am not the expert on scrapping a bus, but at 15k, I think you will have to work hard to break even. Are you counting your time? However, if that bus has some big-ticket items you need, then good used is an inexpensive way to save some money…..FWIW

I stopped by ABC Bus in MN yesterday on my way to the twin cities - looking for EL3 parts. There were so many 8's and 9's in the back yard that I think you could buy one for next to nothing. No way wopuld I pay $15K for a Parts bus! I bought a EL3 for parts several years ago for about the same as you would pay for the 9. This was WITH a 60 series and world 6 sp. Please rethink buying this!

FWIW. I agree with the comments above.

Keep the cash. Buy fuel. Enjoy your personal coach.

James, hsving dismantled over 75 busrs over the last 10 years, mostly gm transits and a few others. if i knew then what i know now i would never have done it. by the time you add together your purchase price, hauling, storage, fuel going to get it,time lost, and the fact no one wants to pay anything for your parts you then have the task of getting rid of the shell.they tell you that the price of metal is so much however if there even one steel scwer in a sheet of al. or stainless they will classifie it as contamatated, or if it has paint on it or is a different thickness down goes the price big time. then you have to get rid of all the wood, plastic, rubber, fabric, glass, insulation, oil, tires, brake pads, and the list goes on. so my advice to you is if you have a place to park a bus where the local gov. people will let you keep it that is a plus, however when you thing how much you are going to pay for this bus to much just to have a part that you may need some day that is way too much to pay. however it is nice to have that spare part.

If the coach is as you stated, why would one want to "part it out"? Looks to me like it might make a good conversion unit....

Maybe I overlooked something??? :-)

Hello all and especially James(MCI Guy), new bus owner here. I too, have a '89 MC9 SE for RV conversion, and may need parts from time to time.

Please send me an email at: cintrepd@sympatico.ca
