What a thing to see. I just watched the story on the national, apparently he not only decapitated the young guy he was guting him too! I am sure the driver and passengers will have trouble sleeping for a while. Dave L

Canadians need to be given the right to protect themselves. Luckily, for whatever the reason, the attacker didn’t slash anyone else. It could have been much worse. Where are the cries to ban knives? The world would be a safer place without knives! I hope the Canadians can pass a solid law that lets the bad guys know to leave their weapons at home, and not to bring them onto buses.

Laryn

The answer would not be in creating more laws, but enforcing the meriad of laws we allready have and consider making punisment much stiffer.

We had the lash administerd once upon a time in our correctional system.
Rate of repeat offenders::: ZERO!!!
Now dont anyone give me this diatribe about cruel and unusual punishment.

Checking for knives would be imposible to do. Where I grew up in Manitoba's Interlake The Grey Goose bus would stop at every little town, or gas station, and pick people up waiting at the side of the highway. But I wish they still hung murderers, Just west of Winnipeg at Headingly jail the gallows are still there and maintained but never used.

It's simple, if anyone gets on a bus without a gun or knife, give them one. End of repeat offenders.

Lets not make silly coments about this horrible crime, I own more side arms than most americans, but am glad I live in a country where I can walk down the street not needing to carry to feel safe.

No laws, no death penalty, no amount of guns or knives would likely have prevented this tragedy.

The killer was obviously deranged, probably possessed the adrenalin fueled strength of ten men, and most certainly was not concerned about what might happen to him.

A gun would have to be used at point blank range in order not to injure or kill other passengers. The shooter would have to be an extremely quick thinker, able to analyze the situation and react in seconds. It would most likely take a trained law enforcement officer to pull it off.

If I were on that bus and armed, five rows back, I don't think I could have done anything to stop it. Certainly, pulling a weapon and saying "Stop or I'll shoot" would have had no effect whatsoever.

This was a horrible tragedy, but no different that an act of God or terrible accident. When a deranged individual does something like this, it's hard to even call it a crime, more like an attack by a wild animal.

Most “trained law enforcement officers” are not very good shots, a proven fact. There are many well-trained privet citizens that can run circles around them. Given the choice to be on a bus with a deranged killer and everyone not armed, or everyone armed trained or not, I will choose the latter. My suggestion is to run alternate buses, one without armed citizens and one with, that way everyone can be happy. Guess which one the bad guys will ride.

My comments about “trained law enforcement officers” was not so much how good a shot they were, but rather the training and experience to make the split second life or death decision in such a case.

I just don't think the average citizen, certainly not myself, no matter how good you may be at the range, is capable of handling a situation like this.

Len,

I think you would do the right thing and you don’t give yourself enough credit. Contrary to what some might think, I am not a gun totin’ Yosemite Sam looking to be somones hero. I am just an average person who believes strongly that people should have the right to be free and to live the way they want to. One aspect of that is the ability to defend oneself against someone who wishes to take your freedom away. I have the faith that good people will make good choices, and they do better when they are given the responsibibity to do so. There are many, many examples showing that they will. I look at all of the fellow bus nuts here as a great inspiration. Look at how so many are willing to drop everything, and come to the aid of their fellows in time of need. John Philpot Curran is credited for saying “Evil prospers when good men do nothing."

And another good one from the same:

"It is the common fate of the indolent to see their rights become a prey to the active. The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt." -- John Philpot Curran: Speech upon the Right of Election for Lord Mayor of Dublin, 1790.

But I do respect your feelings on this issue even if I dissagree.

To my friend on the left,

Cheers!

Laryn

In court today the accused did not enter a plea. His only words during the one hour hearing was a quiet "Please Kill Me" he said this to the judge. At the crowns request the judge ordered a syc, assesment. The details of the crime were also read aloud in court, they discribed him as eating part of the victim and having parts of the victim in his pockets. May God grant this younge man a peacful eternal rest after such a horrible end to his life! Dave L

Just to let you all know what sick Bastards those scum at PETA are. They are runing an ad campain comparing this horible murder to the butchering of cows and pigs that we eat. They wanted to run the ad first in Portage La Prairie, MB just east of where the crime happend, but the local paper said no. Dave L

I live just west of where this horrible thing happened (no words to really descrbe it). In my opion another thing that equally discusts me is the fact that the murderer is still alive. He obiously was very easy to provoke. Our RCMP should have never allowed this individual to leave alive. What's our system really doing to protect us. When the murderer can taunt to RCMP waving a knife and carrying a head, and they take him into custody?? They would have done him and the rest of us a favor. Lets face it, no amount of money is going to fix this guy. I drove by this bus 4 or 5 times on my way to work. My stomach turned everytime and still does. I think everyone should have a little shot of reality and really think about what happened. This isn't necessarlily about guns nor what we would do in this situation, to me it's about what our law inforcement and justice system has and can do for us. I am disappointed time after time, and we're paying for it!! I agree, this was probably an isolated incodent, but does this excuse it??

I don't think anything could excuse it. I only heard of such things in Afghanistan. And one day by the grace of god we will wipe the talliban out.
Grant I know this is off topic but do you go to Thresherman's, that is one show I miss since moveing. Maybe next year me and the beast will roll out there for it.

Hey David You bet I went to the Thershman's. I live just outside of Austin. My wife and I volanteered at the beer gardens friday night and put our 1955 F-100 in the car show. Attendence was down somewhat. I don't think they have enough going on to interest the upcoming generation. Would be very good if you could make it out. Be sure to let me know if you can make it so we can get together. There are a few of us that camp there. I noticed you live in London now, my wife is from there and I spent 14 years there, miss it quite a lot, have thought about a move from time to time. How is the economy doing there?
